So the guy at my local NAPA tells me my starter is dragging. The solenoid is firing the motor but the motor does not spin every time. My parts man said it's the loweend of the motor?? Anybody know where to get a US made replacement starter, or the replacement cost for the original equipment?

Ryan Delaney sells the only US made replacement that I know of - assuming you've got the QD100C3 that is. But be prepared to part with $300. New OE starter prices are all over the map. I've found them anywhere between $160 and $270. Shop around.

I would take a chance and check out a few things first, on the starter.
Brushes - check they are in good condition and sit propely on the commutator. Also, that there is adequate pressure on the brushes so they actually sit on the commutator properly. there should be a light pressure of about 2oz or 3oz applied by the spring arrangement - light contact acts like a resisitance, reduces voltage and consequently the motor won't urn worth a **** if that is the case.

Check the solenoid - open up and look at the internal connection. It might be something is not closing properly.

If the problem is intermittent then there is a good chance it can be fixed. Also check the wiring to make sure there is no broken wire that makes and breaks contact somewhere. All simple stuff that you can do yourself, before parting with more money.

Jim,

OK, so how do I do those checks without destroying the things?

Lakespirit-
I don't have an answer on how to fix the starter but do remember that the manual (on Jinma) says to replace/ repack the grease @ 1000 hrs. And do remember others having problems with the grease in the starter. You may want to try that first or will the starter work if warmed up with a heat gun or hair dryer? Good luck -Ed

By taking it to an auto-electric shop. I wouldn't put much faith in that NAPA diagnosis.

Don't know how they do it in Idaho - but around here they don't charge to tell you what's wrong, if it can be fixed, and/or how much it may cost to fix it.

Like Jim and Red have suggested, maybe it's a simple matter of cleaning, adjusting, re-lubricating. I've done this to a QD100C3 myself. And I'm thinking you might be better off just taking it off the tractor - and straight to the auto electric shop. Disconnect the positive battery cable at the battery before you start though.

Have the battery load tested while you're at it

Well folks, I was able to perform yet another miracle on my tractor!! Yes, I did do all the trouble shooting suggested, and consequently, not only did she fire right up, but all the grounds, etc. are shiny metal to metal. Turns out a good cleaning inside the motor did the trick. Thanks for all the help.

Good job. But don't expect the shiny metal to stay that way long without protection. Rust doesn't make for a very good conductor.

I suggest you buy a tube of silicon dielectric. It's intended to be used on the two (clean) surfaces to be mated, then again over the top of them after the connection is tightened down. Some people use grease, which serves to slow down oxidation also. But if silicon dielectric is permitted to set up prior properly, it won't turn into a dirt magnet like grease.
