With our temps warming and the rain we had this past week, the snow is certainly getting more dense here but we can still ski. We traveled south today about 50 miles which is out of the lake snow zone to check a trail out. Not knowing what the conditions would be like down there, we brought carbide cleats for our boots, BC skis and snowshoes. The carbide cleats are seen below. The star looking things on the cable are indeed carbide. We ended up snowshoeing and will post photos as soon as they are processed. Thanks!

Let me add these ICETrekkers Diamond Grip traction cleats are the only ones we'll use. (y)

We have those cleats. They are great. They reall stick in place when it is raining on the melting frozen snow. Our snow went so fast this year, we only used them a time or two. Jon

Notice the little pine cones among the debris?? Its remnants of cones tore apart to eat the seeds in them by red squirrels. Could be chipmunks doing this as well.

We skiied on the North Country Trail and after that, we headed to Courtney Lake for another short ski. These are all in Ottawa NF and south of us a bit. Our snow is going down fast! And might be our last XC for the year. The bottom one is Courtney Lake NFS campground that we've stay at many times.

Today we ventured up the Keweenaw to the Poor Rock Abby trails near Eagle Harbor MI. The Abby is on the lake shore were as this mine and trails is part way up the bluff. The mine ruins are from the Arnold Mine which was ran in around 1860 to 63.

Historical, industrial question for you all. Why can't we see any mortar in the building foundation in the bottom photos??

There was no mortar in the Copper Country until around the turn of the century. Without that, how did they stay up??

OK, that question was a tough one. There wasn't any cement up here until around the turn of the century but they could get lime. That of course has washed out of foundation but if you tear into them, some remaining lime can me found.
