One thing I did to minimize windrowing in heavy grass is, I drilled a hole in the side shield and I run with it up and held with a shock cord. That way the side discharge mower throws the clippings far enough not to windrow. In fact at rated RPM, I can throw them about 15 feet.

Everything on the mowers is stout except the fenders. Probably why they cost so much new.

I remove side chutes first thing on every mower.

The arm repair is solid but looks so-so, however my plan is to replace both side arms when I switch to 15" gauge wheels sometime this winter.

I don't simply because when mowing near the roadside, I don't want to have anything solid impact a passing vehicle or tractor and we live on a dirt / gravel road and stones always wind up in the grass.

I just hook them up with a tarp strap and when mowing near the road, drop it down.

Guy down the road was mowing his side yard with the deflector removed and took out his wife's windshield with an errant rock. She was not happy and he had to pay for a new windshield.

Unfortunately I have to mow along the roadside. Interestingly, near the next town to the west, there was a guy mowing with deflector up on the edge of a paved road and hit a car with something and there was a State cop right behind that car and he got hit as well and not only gave the mower guy a ticket but had is mower towed and impounded. Don't know all the details however. I could see a mower hanging from a wrecker going down the road....lol

I have it set at 3.5" about.

I just checked where my deck is set- 3.5". Seems like most of us run it about there.
