kubota models m vs mx

The m5640sud is listed at 3858lbs, the mx5100 hst is 3774, and 3620 with gears. They also have the exact same displacement. I'm not saying they are the same, but that's actually less than a few hundred pounds. I didn't know about the 5640 when I bought my MX, but I sort of wish I had. Build your Kubota only listed the 5640 as $1000 more than my 4700. Now, there's no hydro option, so I'm still happy with my decision, but it would have been nice to try both.

i'm with you on that & am sure the OP appreciates your input hope you continue to be content with your tractor...the mx5000 was a no nonsense workhorse for me that anyone could be proud of :)

I just sold one last week. It was only built for a couple of years (2010-2011, I think). It was offered in response to a John Deere model that had a high "value" appeal. As such, it is a very basic HST tractor. (No draft control, jerky 3 pt. hitch, minimal OEM options available.)
Gotcha, thanks for the info.

what separates a m from an mx. I am in the market for something along what I see about the mx4700 or the mx5100. But when I look at tractor adds for the used ones I never know how to judge what is a good deal and what is not. M vs MX is just one of my many confusion points, Clearing that one up will help. MX 5100 appears to be what I want but don't want to buy without understanding what it is and what it is not. I moved in my thinking from L4700 to the MX ( a little heavier) just from some things I have read.

Night and day difference between an MX and M. I came close to buying a used MX5100DT w/ 844 FEL but the dealer would not throw in a brush guard, so I walked. Finally found a nice used M5040 w/ 1153 FEL and I am much happier with all the extra features. The M5040 cost more but it is worth every dime.

I think the best thing to do is head to your dealership and have them park an MX next to an M so you can see the difference then run both. Price was the main factor for me. The M was about $5k more than the MX and I couldn't justify it.

L3700SU is a tractor/loader package. The tractor itself is not much different than the L3400, but was sold couple of grand cheaper than L3400 + loader.

SU stands for Special Utility. I think all Kubota SU tractors are basically tractor/loader packages, which are a little cheaper that getting the same tractor + loader separately.

I saved about $2K buying the L3700SU vs L3400 + the same loader.

Here is more info on the L3700SU:

What is a L3700SU? Have never seen one around here...

<snip>Seems futile to find a good used one that would not wind up costing me just as much as a new one in the long term.
Depends on the USED tractor and how much YOU will use it.

For instance my uses will be a few hundred hours a year at the most.

I set my sights on getting a 40HP tractor that could lift a ton on the back w/ 4wd and FEL for under $15K. Brand had to be one of the top four.

I bought a 1995 M4700 w/ 1400 hrs, seemingly well maintained by the county. For about $12K. Lifts about 2 ton on the back and 1 ton on the FEL. I've put about $100 in it for hoses, need new front tires ?$400?. And I've put about 100 hours on it.

There's a comparable one for sale at http://www.tractorhouse.com/listingsdetail/detail.aspx?OHID=6992855 for $16.5K. A MX4700 new would cost about $25K, and that only lifts about a ton on the back.

So -
New - $25K (but a lot less power)
Used - $12K

I couldn't justify twice the cost for a few hundred hours per year. I can put a lot of maintenance into it for another $12K.

One thing I don't like about my MX5100 is that there is no "idiot light" for the parking brake. Do they have one on the M series? (YES- I am the idiot that forgot to release the brake.)

I think everyone that has switched from a geared transmission to an HST tractor needs the idiot light, it's too easy to forget when you push on the go pedal. After awhile I noticed the increased HST whine if I forgot it. It sort of functions as the idiot light for me now. I do think the MX is the best value tractor I have ever owned and the only gripes I have about it other than that are fuel consumption and turbocharger and HST whines are very load. I realize that with a turbocharged 50 HP HST tractor the trade off for fuel consumption is flexibility, ease of use, and maneuverability. It has been and is a great tractor for my needs.

The grand L series has a light on the dash that comes on when the parking brake is engaged. I would have to look and see where the switch is mounted.

Well, if it had an idiot light and IF you were like me, you'd be wishing the idiot light flashed in order to draw the absent-minded operator's attention to it.

Yes, my tractor has an idiot light for the parking brake and I've STILL managed to drive it with the parking brake engaged. :ashamed: :duh:
