Leak in front end 4WH seal- 187D yanmar

An oil seal is shown there in the parts diagram for the 186D. Doesn't the 187D use the same front end ? (seal #194447-13650)

Yes, thanks for that. You are right. It is the same seal on the 187D, and it is right where you say...and replacing should do some good. But as I remember it - and my memory of 30 year old events ain't great - that seal had the seal lips oriented up to keep the dirt out, not down to keep the oil in. But maybe I'm wrong or it's been changed....I hope I'm wrong and you are right, because that would be an improvement. Probably we ought to look at one and check the lip orientation before doing it though. Anyone got one of those seals? I might have one somewhere. Will try to remember to look this weekend.

Another reason I was reluctant to mention it was because it getting that seal in there isn't an easy job.It involves taking that tower gear assembly apart and there are not one, but two pairs of bevel gears and I do hate to set those things up. So it isn't the sort of thing I'd recommend for an unknown mechanic. But yes, I should have left that decision to the owner. BTW, the workshop manual doesn't give much info on setting up those gears. Not as much info as we would like on the whole front end drive - given that gear drive front end was unique to Yanmar and was their great selling point at the time the tractor was built. And it has since become common to many 4WD tractors. I guess to my mind given the work and messing with the bevel gear engagement it just didn't seem worthwhile to replace that seal that tends to leak anyway.... And as long as it is leaking there is enough oil in the tower. Nothing is starving for lube. He isn't hurting his tractor.
Thanks again, rScotty

I "fixed" a leaking Chevy rack and pinion and a bad output shaft seal on my rotary cutter, (got a length of bailing strap wrapped up in it), both about 6 years ago with Lucas PS Stop Leak, and both still good. It's about the same viscosity as 90wt, and those slow moving front end parts should run forever with it.

rscotty , based on your experience and knowledge , I would avoid that repair myself and go with norm's remedy if mine should leak. Your input is much appreciated.

I had exactly the same leak on my 186D....right side. Having read past threads on this subject.....I tried the Lucas PS Stop Leak about a week ago. Used the tractor about an hour last weekend. Problem seems to have gone away.....no leak. Try the Lucas before tearing anything apart. :)

Just a follow up on the thread and solution.....put the Lucas Power Steering stop leak in the front end.....used it all yesterday.....no leaks!! I see a little dampness around the seal area....but nothing leaked out....

Thanks Guys! Saved me alot of time and money!

I am thinking why would you not go ahead and put some of this in as a prevention??

Scott,

I have a pretty good article IMO, from when I tore apart the front end on my 1610D. If you do a search for "1610D Complete Knuckle teardown" you will find it. It was my first time doing it so I tried to document the steps with pictures. The operation was a 100% success so I must have done it right.

Dont know for sure if your front end is the same but if its close the article should help.

Justin

How much Stop Leak are you guys putting in the front axle? I notice it comes in 12 oz. and quart sizes.

I wouldn't use any more than necessary, just in case the engineers had a good reason for recommending 90wt:confused:.

I bought the small 12 oz. bottle. Used about 4/5 oz.........leak has stopped completely. Scott......the dampness you refer to will probably go away after a little more use.....mine did. Glad you solved the problem.
