An oil seal is shown there in the parts diagram for the 186D. Doesn't the 187D use the same front end ? (seal #194447-13650)
Yes, thanks for that. You are right. It is the same seal on the 187D, and it is right where you say...and replacing should do some good. But as I remember it - and my memory of 30 year old events ain't great - that seal had the seal lips oriented up to keep the dirt out, not down to keep the oil in. But maybe I'm wrong or it's been changed....I hope I'm wrong and you are right, because that would be an improvement. Probably we ought to look at one and check the lip orientation before doing it though. Anyone got one of those seals? I might have one somewhere. Will try to remember to look this weekend.
Another reason I was reluctant to mention it was because it getting that seal in there isn't an easy job.It involves taking that tower gear assembly apart and there are not one, but two pairs of bevel gears and I do hate to set those things up. So it isn't the sort of thing I'd recommend for an unknown mechanic. But yes, I should have left that decision to the owner. BTW, the workshop manual doesn't give much info on setting up those gears. Not as much info as we would like on the whole front end drive - given that gear drive front end was unique to Yanmar and was their great selling point at the time the tractor was built. And it has since become common to many 4WD tractors. I guess to my mind given the work and messing with the bevel gear engagement it just didn't seem worthwhile to replace that seal that tends to leak anyway.... And as long as it is leaking there is enough oil in the tower. Nothing is starving for lube. He isn't hurting his tractor.
Thanks again, rScotty
