When I recently replaced mine......I took a large pair of channel locks....opened them up enough to fit around the shaft and lightly pounded the collar on. Slow process but it worked. Even if you slightly nick the bottom of the collar.....it should be OK since the seal rides up higher on the collar. Good luck.....:thumbsup:

Oh this will be a piece of cake use white lube, motor oil, 90wt anything and use a bottle jack under the collar with a pipe like I suggested.

Or a socket and jack it up a constant presure is whats needed. It runs in 90wt so use that if you have it, its not going to take much force and you sure as heck dont want torch heat no no no I understand now.

The o-ring inside the collar is fighting you is all and once you get past that edge of the housing it should go right on. good luck

I have been known to wrap a chain around what ever I am pressing on and under the bottle jack even using a floor jack and that keeps it from just lifting. (wink)

Now we are talking....thanks jerrybob and winston - two good ideas to work with.

May end up needing to use both ideas...socket and jack first....then visegrips 2nd....... I had not thought about a socket.......thanks Winston!


I knew someone would have a better way than what I had come up with far.

If some one else has done it another way....let me know as well.....that way who ever does a search on how to do this will have several ways.

I would try some ABS pipe. It is plasitic so it wont damage the collar.

Finally got it back together. I picked up a 1 1/2" pvc piece to use to insulate the blow from the hammer. Once the collar was on the sleeve, I used the inside corner of the pvc piece to slowly knock it up. This took a while so go slowly and have patience. WD40 was my choice for lubing. No damage to the collar so it was ready to go once it was up.

Will finish filling up the axle housing tonight and see if I get any leaking overnight.

I decided to clean the outside up and paint while I was there.....my theory is paint to keep the rust from getting too bad.....my tractor has alot of rust spots so I will tackle this over the summer.
