Lean to Shed

Why are you building a lean to instead of extending the existing rooflin?, or if that's too big, build a new roof that matches the existing roofline below the existing roof?

$$$ and ease of project, I imagine... I am wrestling with an extension to my garage vs. a lean to. But a real good question!

For something that you have to live with and could add significant value to your home, it's not a lot more money. Especially when you end up with a space that has 8 foot walls or taller all around it!!!

Maybe an actual pic of what you are working with?

I'm sorry. I thought I had posted this picture. The roof runs perpendicular to the side of the house that I'm working with. Cost and ease and installment is the biggest reason. Also structure is sound level. It will remain as it is for the foreseeable future IMG-20190803-WA0001.jpg

On our property we have an old house that had a fire in a portion of it. The house is unusable and will eventually be torn down. I am looking for some additional covered storage out there. I was planning to put a lean to on one side of it. I am new to this type of building but am good with my hands and love to learn.
...

Do you have power to the building? That weather-head should be raised, but if you leave it where it is, that is going to severely limit what you can do off of this side of the building.

Looking at the picture, and re reading what you originally posted about the condition of the building, and they need for storage, I'm wondering if you could just remove the two windows and open up their opening big enough to turn that part of the house into your storage area? Dollar wise, it would be cheaper then any other idea that I can think of. You can get 9 foot wide garage doors from Lowes pretty cheap if you wanted to close it up, or just leave it open like you would the lean to idea. How bad is the roof? Can you cover it with metal like you would the lean to? Put the money you are going to spend on the lean to and create a barn/garage out of the house?

I’m building a leanto also. The span from wall to inside of the posts is 14’ 1”.

I have 2 x 10s for the outer header.

Sodamo, would you feel comfortable using 2x6s for my span? Torn between using the 2x6s and 2x8s. IMG_0800.jpg

Eddie. The picture is a little dated. Power is no longer running to the house. And that weatherhead and everything else on the side of the house will be removed. The roof is an excellent condition. The house previously had an interior fire that has interior fairly damage but the bones are still in tact. I do not know if it would be wise to Park anything heavy on the floor. There is a crawl space Under the house.

Now that all of the electrical stuff is out of the way, cut a big hole from window to window and put a header up!!!!

Why keep the floor? Cut it out too.

Since your walls are resting on the floor, you need to cut it out a little at a time so you can make sure the walls on the joists dont move, but a little bracing should solve that.

Use what you have already standing there and forget about building a half *** lean to.

You have to eval in entirety, but I’d likely do the 2x6 @16oc. I rarely do 24 and never 48.
