I liked the one i saw that did not have the flat at the end so when you stopped, the log dropped back down, breaking itself on downhills etc. It was also set further back such that it lifted more of the log.

WHat happens when you go down hill with a log (think ice/snow) will that log slide forward and shove the ATV somewhere?

Somewhere will likely not be a good place. ;)

If its icy and deep snow you most likely won't be going up the hill anyways. When you slow down the slider slides back down the rod and the log is lowered to the ground. The log will actually stop you. My woods has some pretty steep ground that I used mine on and I found it very easy to stop going down hill. In my experience I found that if I could make it up the hill with the empty skidding arch there would be no problem going down safely. Naturally you should go slow when traveling down a grade with a log in tow.

I'm not skidding anything in the winter........I'll leave that to the Pro's and Amish! I'm just trying to recover blown down trees that would just rot, and recover whatever I can in the Spring after the snow's gone.......Sorry if I mis-led anyone.........~Scotty370

Come on..winter's the best time for wood recovery, at least until the snow gets too deep. No flies, no sweating, frost on yer whiskers..

It requires a winch but I have an older version of this without the tongs, just a cable you wrap around the log.
