'lost' tool funny one.

An update to my earlier post. K0ua made me feel so bad for my poor little lost pocket knife. I went out looking for it again and ran the magnet over the area for another hour or so. Started to dig up the two most likely shrubs, but I planted them so meticulously that I know I would have noticed the knife fall in so it has to be some other place.

Today I went out to check on the shrubs and voila! My pocket knife missed me too! It must have dug itself out and crawled laboriously across the grass to a place I would be sure to find him. Oddly, a place I had looked and dragged that magnet across several times with no luck. Today, however, I spot him just a few seconds after walking over to the beds. Such a joyous reunion it was! I picked him up and carried him back into the house where he received a nice hot soapy bath and a good rubdown with oil. I told him I loved him and would never leave him alone like that again. :thumbsup: I just hope he forgives me.

Lol When I was over the next few days I called it, he didn't like that. He pulled the blocks out again, said he's going to find it but is still looking for it.!!!

I bought a metal dedector years ago that has repeatedly save my butt when I lost something in the tall grass. A tiny nut or bolt that is lost is easy and a lost pocketknife would be mere child's play.

In 1964 I was doing front-end and brake work for a General Tire store and a job for a salesman on a chrysler. I did a front end alignment and brake job and installed 4 new tires. A bout a month later he came back for a tire rotation. I found my 7/8 snap-on combination wrench still on the caster and camber adjustment nut. I told him about it and he said he had been to California and back since the brake job. I still have the wrench.

My parents had a Dodge Conversion van that they took in for an alignment back in the early 90s. It came back, but was pulling to one side and had a nasty clunk. Dad looked and found a nice 1/2" SnapOn ratchet with an extension and a deep socket. Dad tightened the bolt (which fixed the pulling), the he called the shop, spoke to the boss. The boss apologized and told him to keep the ratchet.

I did inspections for insurance companies, they would want plug swaps and the engine checked out to see if the accident was staged. I found a guys finger. I put it in a bag and took it to the office I figured someone would want it. The office did not, the RCMP came over a couple of days later and got it, I put it in my tool box for safe keeping

I mechaniced after high school in a taxi stand/garage (and sometimes drove taxi when a good looking little chicky needed a ride) The dispatcher was and old timer by the name of Bill who always had a big cud of tobacco in his cheek. I wasn't there when it happened but several drivers were. Bill reached in his pouch of Yarrow pulled out a big wad of tobacco, started stuffing it in his mouth and realized something hard was in it. Turned out to be about 1 1/2 inches of somebody's quite well preserved finger.
Bill gave up chewing that night!!!

Best way to find a lost tool: "Buy a new one."

Backing BX out of garage one day to do some trail work saw 12' piece of 1/4 in chain on the floor. Said to self "That might come in handy." Got off tractor and tossed it into FEL. On way to intended work site came across several small rocks so curled bucket and pushed them aside then scooped dirt from edges of trail to fill the holes. Eventually got to intended work site, cut two dead trees and reached back to the BH platform for my chain. Aaah you put it in the bucket you dumb#$$.:mur: Have tried metal detector in the area I move the rocks and dirt with no luck.

While replacing a mirror on 98 GMC my 1/4 knuckle and socket fell inside the door. Removed door panel and retrieved socket but not the knuckle. Swung door back and forth several times hoping to dislodge the knuckle, no luck. As it was getting late managed to get mirror install completed and door panel reinstalled. Figured that a couple trips up and down our 1/2 mi dirt road would get the knuckle to show itself. That was four years ago and to the day I traded in the truck that knuckle never rattled or dropped into the bottom of the door. Maybe the next owner will find it.

I recall once as a young kid, I had a new pocket knife which was hard to come by since money was tight. I was cultivating and we had a lot of tie-vines. At the end of row turnaround, I had stopped, used my knife to cut a bunch of vines from the plows. When I finished and started plowing again I missed my knife so I returned to the pile of vines and searched all over, move all of them several times, no luck. Next I thought maybe it was on the cultivator and fell off, so I tracked back all the rows that I had covered and didnt find it. About 2 years later, I was driving down the turnrow and happened to look at the fence and there was my old rusted knife sticking in the top of a fence post. The part of the blade stuck in the post was shiney as new, but the rest was a rusted together hunk. My replacement, when I finally made enough money to afford one was a Uncle Henry stainless steel one with loss replacement guarantee. They would replace it free if you lost it, but wouldnt you know it, I never lost that one and was too honest to just send in the form and get a spare.

A couple of years ago we re-built the roof of our 1890 farmhouse with some clever and highly effective insulation. This allowed us to open up the roof-space and remove the 3" of compacted sawdust that was previously the only line of defense between us and a Swedish winter.

Buried under the sawdust we found a few old tools that had - I assume - been lost for over a century. A beautiful pry-bar or "Kofot" (cow-foot in Swedish) that had been smithed out of a decent piece of steel, and a chisel that appears to have been made from an old plow-share.

I popped them into a corner with a note attached to them for future generations to discover
