Most here recommend more than 40-horsepower (net) for a cab Grand L.

Kubota L4060 Power
Engine (gross):42 hp
31.3 kW
Engine (net):40 hp
29.8 kW

The cab adds 375 pounds to tractor weight.

It takes three horsepower to power air conditioning.

Kubota L4060 Weight
3737 lbs
1695 kg (DT ROPS)
3748 lbs
1700 kg (GST ROPS)
3759 lbs
1705 kg (hydro ROPS)
4134 lbs
1875 kg (hydro cab)

4,134 pounds hydro cab + 1,279 pounds FEL = 5,413 pounds

5,413 pounds / 40 horsepower = 135 pounds per horsepower.

5,413 pounds / 37 horsepower = 146 pounds per horsepower.

Is your L4060 equipped with "loaded" rear tires or wheel weights?

I am not familiar with that ratio or rule of thumb you mention and you never say what the target number or max recommended is. I assume it is just for Kubota HST transmissions ???. Could you explain what it all means. Reason I ask is I have a 5000 lb 30 hp L3010DT (geared) the way it is set up - 166lb per hp and a 14,500 lb 70 hp dozer with torque converter - 207 lb per hp. Both have no trouble climbing steep hills with an addition load.
Thanks.

Something is amiss here. My tractor is not much more hp than yours. It will lift a full bucket load of1"base rock (dust included) with no problem. And my road is very steep. Have taken many loads up it with the box blade on back for working on the road. Always in low gear also for that job. My rear tires are loaded.

I also own a 4060 HSTC. Using cruise control with the tractor unloaded mine will pull a reasonably steep hill in Medium High and at 2200 RPM's, until it slows to about 12-14 mph. I then shift it to low on the column shift and it will maintain 12 mph to the top. Pull it back up into high and it goes back up to around 20 mph.

As other responders stated you must learn to let up on the HST pedal when it slows down. I also keep the "Stall Guard" feature on at all times.

Check the hydraulic pressure to see if it is up to spec. Mine was about 10% low and after I shimmed it up to reach specs my loader worked better. I regularly pick up oak logs that are 24 inches in diameter and 10 feet long and pallets loaded with a 1/2 cord of hard wood. It is all the machine can do to lift the logs and they have to be at the back of the forks for it to lift them.

I'm beginning to think, from what I'm hearing, that my 1987 Kubota B9200 hydro would leave all you guys in the dust. :)

Edit: All 22 HP!

Nope, not unless the wind was blowing dust in my face. Or I had to regen. Ha. couldn't resist it. (regen would not stop it)

AG tractors, in general do not offer heavy lifting capacities.
It sounds like you need something like a John Deere 110. Or, like mine, JCB MIDICX.
These are construction tractors with 3ph capabilities. Rather then an AG tractors with FEL capabilities

My tractor is not apples to apples with the Grand L, but for comparison, it will climb a 27 degree (not percent!) slope with brush hog mowing heavy grass in low (4wd and rear locked for traction) with loader on and loaded tires. That's an approximate weight/hp ratio of 208lbs/hp. She is working hard and using every one of those 25 horses, but climbs the hill or spins the tires.

OP- I wonder if your auto throttle is causing some of the problem? My Poverty L doesn't have those fancy features!

Doesn't make sense. If first time tractor/HST owner, I am betting this is due to improper use of the treadle and/or improper mode settings for HST+.

Best to think about the treadle as a gearing control. The more you push it down the higher effective gear you are using in an infinitely variable transmission. For some reason, beginners love to mash it and then wonder why they can't go up a hill. Try putting your car in 5th gear and attempt to climb a hill from a dead stop, it won't work too well either.

And that issues has been resolved. Yes the mode and settings was wrong. Yes the RPMs was up and therefore the thought was not enough HP. Didn’t know the whole “let” part of the pedal and now it all makes sense.

That didn’t change the concern about the lift capacity either. However now with the stall control and auto throttle off things are working much better for it and for us. Thanks

Glad you got it figured out. I never cared for the auto throttle much since in most cases it runs a lot higher rpm than what is needed. I set the engine speed for how much power i need (or pto speed if mowing etc) and adjust ground speed with hst pedal.
