I don't have a 'list'.. but I know some gl-4 / 5 gear oils can be incompatible with 'yellow' metals.. which I take to mean brass or bronze.. ( bushings? washers? etc.. ).. perhaps copper.. Can't verify that though.

Penzoil, and at least one other company make a gl-4 that specifically claims that it is 'ok' with yellow metals.. etc.

I don't know what is in a jinma rear end.. but the antiques i play with.. some of them have expensive hydro pumps imersed in the diffy area.. and these pumps are 60% yellow metal.. and well.. parts are NLA... So we antique people are choosy about lubricant compatibility.. etc...

Hi Gys: Yep "Yellow" metals are the ones of Bronze, copper and brass. many gear boxes have syncros (Triumph) and shims (Old types ) that use these metals.without having a box apart from a Jinma I don't know if there are any of these metals in there but I would expect so. SO to be safe I got the Castrol GL- 4 80W90 gear oil It's not too expensive and readily avail. (about 10 bucks a gallon.) Now what makes em unsafe for yellow metal is the amount of sulfer used in making the oil. Gl-5 is not safe for yellow metal . Gl-4 is ok Not to many mfg make GL-4 but Castrol is reccom.by Triumph in their manual trannys because of the yellow metals. I haven't seen any problems with foaming either, But I don't put that much time on my machines .Hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey Mark1,

Well, today I read on the Super Tech 85w140/GL5 and also the 80w90 GL5, that WalMarts sells. Both containers of Gear Oil say, that they fight corosion on Copper and Bronze. So I am assuming that they are compatible with Yellow Metals, but it did not say anything on the container about brass though. Both containers also say that they fight foaming. But I haven't put mine to work since I put the 85w140 in it, to know if it will foam or not. I sure hope that it doesn't foam,, but if it does,, then I will have to go back to the 80w90.

Oh by the way, the Super Tech is 7 dollars a gallon, at WalMarts.

So I am thinking if the 85w140 passes the foaming test, then I will be ok in using it. Heck I don't know,, but maybe it will work and help to prevent leaks.

Have a nice day,
Joe /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
