M7060 Rops 50 hour service... $1100?!

I have a Kubota M7060. I changed my engine oil and oil filter myself at 59 hr for about $75. The hydraulic oil and filters are not changed until 500 hours according to my operator's manual.

My 2015 M7060HDC shows the 50 Hour service to include: Check Engine Start System, Wheel Bolt Torque, Tie-Rod Dust Cover, Change Engine Oil, and Engine Oil Filter.

Does not include Hydraulic Oil & Filters, Air Filters, Fuel Filters, etc.

The 50 Hour Service should not cost $1100 IF the Dealer was following the Kubota Maintenance Service Intervals schedule.

The Dealer Service Rep. should have told you they were doing much more than the above and get your approval before doing it.

Bingo.

I used an old galvanized wash tub. After draining, the tub was filled so close to the lip that I could not slide it out to the side without spilling it so I needed to ladle a few gallons out.

SDT

I use two of those black plastic concrete mixing tubs from Home Depot or Lowe's. Works excellent and rarely spill a drop. Then I scoop some out with a homemade milk jug scoop and it all works for me.

I have an M7040 and negotiated the 50 hour service as part of the deal when I bought in 2011. I remember the service guy being here for close to 3 hours to finish the 50 hour service as mine had all the fluids changed. Fast forward to today I called the dealer to get a price on them doing the 600 hour service and they suggest I'm looking at around $800.00 plus the travel time for the service guy to get here and back. They charge $ 93/hr when travelling and I'm 2 hours each way so I was looking at an additional $400 just in travel. The service manager told me to wait until he checked with other owners in my area to see if we could share the travel. That worked fine as he found another service call so I'm looking at about $1000.00 for the 600 hr service. I could get it done locally cheaper but because the tractor is now 8 years old..and no issues so far.. I don't mind spending a little extra to bring them in.

I use empty 5 gallon buckets to drain into, as one gets mostly filled I can tip an empty in and slide one out, fill them about 2/3rds full and they switch out easily.

Something that puzzles me is the low hour to oil changes on say Kubota and Caterpillar. Caterpillar hydrostatic like an excavator - first oil change at 4,000 hours. Hydro pumps, motors built by same suppliers. Is it that Kubota does not clean up their components as well at the start? Having inspected so many Caterpillar systems after test cycles I might expect that, especially after seeing the magnetic particles on the filter magnet (Cat doesn’t use such a magnet). However, particles on the magnet mean they didn’t go through the system. Caterpillar machines must meet a certain hydraulic oil cleanliness spec before a machine can be shipped, but at my plants the machines rarely failed this final inspection. I have Blackstone Labs analyze my hydraulic and engine oils when I change. Their analysis always shows oil very good, contamination very low, keep doing what you are doing. I know Caterpillar spends a lot developing their filters. I have had the unfortunate duty of telling people their use of a substitute brand resulted in their failure - you pay - but this is from testing the filters, not just seeing the off-brand and using it as an excuse.

It COULD have to do with larger use of aluminum versus steel. Magnets of course do not pick up aluminum.

Before jumping to conclusions, let me clarify. I did inquire about services and fees prior to service. I was never told all fluids nor was I told $1100. My mistake was not getting it in writing. Had I known this would have been the outcome, I can guarantee I would have taken a different approach. Lesson learned and it won’t happen again.

Did they actually change the hydraulic fluid? Giant waste of money. I could be talked into replacing the hydraulic filters but not the fluid at 50 hrs. Ensure you understand the purpose of both - filters remove contaminates, fluid breaks down over a period of time and loses its protective qualities. 50 hours is nothing for synthetic hydraulic fluid. Look in your owners manual, it spells it out.
If the dealer replaced the fluid at 50 hours, I’d be asking why! My 2016 certainly doesn’t call for it, but I’ve seen some Kubota manuals that are mis-printed with replacing the fluid at 50 hours when replacing the filters. Completely unnecessary.
