RAT, I thought you had taken care of those tranny problems. If you haven't bought yet , check Jasper transmissions. I've always had good luck with them . They use to offer 36mo. 36000 mi warranty. They deliver to your door.

They shipped out the new, new one or second remanufactured yesterday. 1.5 weeks after I complained about the problem. It's frustrating, but whats new ya know, really. I'm getting more of a "Who Cares" attitude all the time.

Ok , I thought you got your money back from the other guys. Good luck ,I hope this time it works for you , Transmissions of that size & weight are not fun to be installing & uninstalling.

Yes, that's for certain.

Rat, what's this "whoooo cares" attitude about? We care? And, i figure you do too, otherwise you'd be curled up in bed thinking 'whooo cares!!!!'

Most important thing, we all keep moving forward, whether with new or old or refurb means!!! ;-)

"Who Cares" was the name of our softball team. Its a way of "chilling out". I was on a job once doing all of the electrical. I was talking to the carpenter running the framing. I was telling him far more then I needed, probably complaining a little as tends to happen whenever government, taxes, and politics comes into play. Right in the middle of my diatribe, he stops me and let out a great big "Whoooooooooooooo Cares" and walked away. I took it personally for about 15 minutes, figured it out and busted up laughing. He helped me see the lighter side of life.

Sometimes thats all you can do, laugh about it and move on. It could always be worse.... We had a couple of other phrases that relate, but probably wouldnt be appropriate /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.. Good luck guys..

I have pulled trailers with this truck since I bought it new in 95. I do know that the cunnings engine adds alot of weight to the front end of that truck. )

Ken Ken Ken, you have to at least have a 2500 with a Cummins, now they may put a cunnings in a 1500, but I haven't seen one yet. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I owned a '95 Ram 1500 4x4 automatic with 5.2 l engine. I had it for eight years and put 265k miles, many weekend trips between VA and upstate NY. Except (and its a big except) for the transmission that truck was solid. The exception was the 90k mile transmission, it required rebuilding every 90k. When it was starting to go for the third time I decided to trade in for a new larger truck.

The mileage stayed around 18 mpg while I owned it, and the emission inspections showed the exhaust gases stayed consistent too. Replaced the battery at the five year mark, flushed radiator every 2 years, plugs and wires every 100k, ran Mobil 1 10k between oil changes, PVC and air filter every 3rd oil change. Tires lasted between 50 and 60k per set. Water pump was replaced when it was six years old, a transmission hose started leaking that same year. Only other thing I remember is replacing the serpentine belt twice, but I may be forgetting a change or two.

well I'm not up on the dodges for the diesle ver much other than riding in a new 4x4 1 ton dually for a while of the last year new so not a lot of miles, we (the company I worked for) traded in 2 chevy 1 ton 4x4 duallys for the dodge each one had about 40K on the chevys with the 454's. sucked gas like crazy, both these needed full on front end rebuilds, (mostly local driving a nd some light med duty hauling) these chevies were bought when the first chevy front end fell out from under it at 35K, he (owner of company) too the wreck in for repair and had a near 8K estimate, but they talked him into trading it in and getting the 2 new ones as we needed the 2nd truck anyways, that first truck was only 2 yrs old at the time .)

now we had an old ford 150 light duty prior with 170K which only needed a king pin replacement and an alt. he thought it was junk and traded it for the chevy.

now the new dodge has a turbo & runs great but I personally have only logged 1000 or so miles in it. rides 100 times better than the chevies did but not nearly as nice as the ford...

now my neibor is a die hard dodge fan, he has 4 of them, and usually has one or more up on blocks for front end work as well. lots of brake & hub problems...

I think I'll stick wiht the fords myself... not that I think they are that much better just when they break they usually will still get you home if you have 1/2 enough since to check the oil & keep the car maintained... every chevy & buick I had would leave me stranded with out a lick of notice.. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

anyhow just my 2 cents worth.

My 96 Dodge is at 116,000 miles. 1 Ton Cummings. I'll have to lean towards the after 100,000 the truck has problems. Mine in particular started about 88,000 miles. This truck hauls, and hauls, and hauls, no recreation driving for the most part.

So far Engine Trouble = None, except for getting it started. Once started it is a Gem. But starting well I have been fighting with that for the last 10,000 miles and $1,600 dollars. Always something different. Havent even bothered with the latest round of dealer opinions.

The interior fell apart at 50,000 miles (3 or 4 years ago). The radio has worked since then. The turn signals and brake lights are fried. I finally had my brother look at it and he ended up replacing all the wiring in the truck, including controlers, and other little boxes. So far so good. Dodge, couldnt find problems. My brother handed me a lump of melted wires. (Note: I had a 1 ton GMC do this as well.)

All in all my standard motto when people ask me about this truck is "Runs Great" if I could pull the engine, and trans and place it in my GM I would be happy. Although I do feel the trans starting to act up....

I might mention that my Brother is a GMC mechanic for 25 years now at a GMC dealer. He has one of the top 5 few return rates of vehicles he worked on in the state (did you know they tracked this stuff). He has a lift at home and more tools at home than most the kids do at dealerships and repair shops. He knocks off 5-10 cars a week in his evenings from Trannies to engines, to door pins.

Given all this, he wont touch my dodge in most cases. Electrical was an exception. He has worked on two previous dodges recently under duress. Needless to say in both cases everyone involved lost. Not becuase he doesnt care, but because it seems once these trucks take a turn for the worst the are gone.

Instance 1) was a trade in that Dodge wouldnt take so the guy traded it to a GM dealer. The GM dealer spent 5000 in parts and sent it to the Dodge Dealer who hit them for another XXX (high figure I dont recall). In the end the dealership lost its tail on this thing.

Instance 2) Was a friend of his who bouth a 3/4 ton diesel cummings. My brother has replaced over $3000 dollars in parts alone in the last 15,000 miles.

My Conclusion: My brother shouldnt work on Dodge /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif but in addition, probably like many things there is a point were bad is bad. I think it all compounds. A domino effect if you will.

So the toughest decision in life is always where to cut your losses and when to push through. Now where did I put my Oracle?

Arthur, parts is parts. I have been driving dodge trucks since 1998. New or semi new. Then I trade them off while they still have value. I do however know folks with very long lasting Dodge trucks. My hay dealer has a 1994 dully that he works the heck out of. If you get new parts it is just like new truck. Parts is parts. You got shafted by a crummy shop. They caused more damage to your truck then it had when it came in and they tell ya it was already that way. Your truck prob don't even need all the things they say. Rebuilding a heavy duty suspension would cost alot but should be well worth it. Your engine will last forever if you take care of it. I think someone abused your unit if the suspension is that badly worn already. alot of times folks never replace shocks, struts, bushings etc.. which leads to more rapid decline of the suspension parts. I go to the same time tire shop for all my oil changes, tires, brakes etc... they check out my vehicles constantly. I replace whatever they say to but I trust them. They are not a repair shop though. I have to punt when I need repairs. Everytime I take a vehicle in to a repair shop or dealer for a tune up the vehicle always performs worse when I get it back.. It is very hard to find a good repair shop. I don't work on my cars anymore. My solution is to drive fairly new vehicles and make the payments.....I may get something from the sixties which is restored then I can make any repair myself provided I can get the parts. Also this way the thing wont lose all of its value in a few short years. Problem is in finding a good old TRUCK that you can pull horse trailers and tractors with......

Find a good shop and fix your truck! Then if you sell it you are not passing the problem on....

Art, I have 309,100 miles on my 1996 Dodge 3/4 ton Auto w/Cummins. I ain't about to give it up yet. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It needs new brake rotors and brakes on the front, a new headliner, some attention to the vacuum pump, and the paint on top of the cab is starting to come off down to the primer. I thought the transmission needed rebuilding last year because it went nuts, but rebooted the PCM by disconnecting the batteries overnight, and now it acts like a new one.

In the 10 years I've owned this truck I've never had the air conditioner serviced and it still works perfectly. I did have rear axle seals replaced once.

My truck has given me a steady 21 to 22 MPG from day one. The only thing I've ever had done to the engine is an oil pressure sending unit replaced. I love this old truck and drive it 140 miles round trip every day. My target is at least 500 kMi. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I think your front end problems are just the kinds of problems seen on a lot of 4x4s.

Just my .02 worth... those of you who have trucks that treat you well have kept up on the maintenance. It sounds like the truck Art bought doesn't fall under this category. This is the voice of experience talking...

In 1998 I bought a '93 dakota with <75K miles, partly because it was a "Certified Auto" and partly because I could pay cash. Apparently the original owner never changed the oil; then traded after overheating it because the radiator sprang a leak, and running it dry on tranny fluid. (I figured all this out later.) When problems arose the dealer simply blew me off, saying the "ticking" of the engine was from the EFI, and that it was normal to take your foot off the gas in order for the AT to shift into 3rd gear. Then I found out the phone # for the "warrantee company" simply was a recording telling you to call your dealer with problems. I had that truck less than 1 1/2 years and dumped $7500 in repairs, matching the original purchase price; and was glad to get $1000 in trade toward a Toyota. (I was even more glad that it made it to the dealer so I could pick up my new truck.)

Based on experience, I'd cut my losses and dump this truck.
It will save you many headaches in the future.

( The owner of the repair shop advised me to just get rid of the truck, said that the cummins is not that good and the dodge trucks start to fall apart after 100K. )

Why would he be in possession of this knowledge and it not be widely known? If there is a brand that falls apart much more rapidly than others, that's kind of hard to keep secret.

When people make generalizations like that, that should raise your level of skepticism of anything further the guy has to say by at least a notch or two. You could ask him to explain further as to what the weak points are but it is unlikely he would have anything specific.

I have owned all three American brands. All have their good and bad points but certainly nothing that would cause me to swear off off a brand for good. I see bumper stickers that say "I'd rather push my Ford/Dodge/Chevy than ride in a Chevy/Dodge/Ford." If the owner really believes that, then he is one seriously stupid person.

I would almost bet that this mechanic has one of those stickers.

Hi All:

An update... After a lot of great advice here, I had the truck fixed. Thanks all for the input. It definitely made me think about what I had and whether or not I should fix the truck. Anyway, I had the axle work done, about 3-400 cheaper than the original shop too! While the truck was at this new shop, I also had the dowel pin secured and a new exhaust (already had in possesion) installed. Truck came home two nights ago and runs as good as ever...

Here's a picture of the truck, having just finished rolling up the driveway thru about a foot of snow, with no problem... (we had a storm today, yea!).

Thanks again for all the feedback! -Art

p.s. The exhaust is a new 4" mbrp. Very good, I recommend....

p.p.s. if anyone needs a good diesel truck mechanic in eastern MA, send me a PM, I have a great recommendation.

Thanks, guys! Yea, it's good to have the "truck of your choice" back. I had a lot of stress trying to figure out if I was going to get another vehicle, and what exactly that would be ! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif But, now I don't have that worry /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

..nice weekend to all...
