A member over on WeldingWeb sent me a roll of Hobart FabCOR CVN .045" Metal Core wire to play with:cool2:. I've never been around Metal Core before. Very fast wire. All I have for gas is 75% argon & 25% CO2. I under stand if you use 90% argon & 10% CO2 it's even faster. I started out with the V350-Pro set on Metal Core .045", but later switched to Standard CV Mig. I like that better. Does make a nice looking weld!

Quick question are you pushing or dragging those welds

I pushed these welds. For some reason I was thinking there would be a thick slag over the weld like flux core. But the welds in the pictures I posted, weren't even wire brushed.
Generally I push with Mig, but some times you have to pull when building things.
Anything that produces slag, I drag.

Picked up a rental bottle of C-10 / 90% argon 10% CO2 gas the other day. This metal core sure makes some pretty welds. And very fast! This is how the weld looks, no wire brushing at all.

This wire does make some nice looking welds:cool:. Here is a vertical down hill open root weld I made with it. Still haven't figured out the proper joint prep.:D
None of these welds were wire brushed!

Longtime welder here.
I experimented with MC wire for a new project that required using spray arc on 14 ga tubing.
My normal job is with 1/8 wall sq tubing using an .035 86 wire with a tri gas mix (.2% o2)
I found that the .035 MC wire along with the 90/10 gas mix gave a much "colder" weld, allowing the use of spray arc mode.

If I didn't know you as well, I would call BS. The first pic looks unreal. U da machine... I mean, da man!

Metal Core is truly a nice process. It was always so expensive that it was cost prohibitive. $3-4 # You can lay down some nice spatter free welds with it. The prices came down and it became more affordable $1.50-2.00# but with the introduction of Pulse, metal core has taken a hit.
