Mower Deck Storage Stand

I did it! The mower stand is complete. Thanks for the Idea KennyG. Overall length of unit is 16". Gave it a rocker test and it will not tip over while working on the deck. I think if I should build another set I would make it 18" but am happy with what I have built. Couldn't help getting a picture of my newest acquisition from an auction today.

What about the oil in the gear box.I have a brand new mower that I haven't even used yet.I set it up on the stands & lost some of the oil out of the gear box. Can't understand how it leaked out as everything was tight.

Rich F, I have had the deck on the stand for 10 days now and no oil leaks. I use 80-90 gear oil. I have a snow blower that would leak real bad so I went up to 130 weight gear oil and it helped slow the leakage down a lot.

Most gearboxes have a vent hole somewhere so they don't pressurize when the gearbox heats up. I'm not sure how my JD 62 is vented, but it doesn't leak when it's vertical on the stands. On the other hand, I considered storing my 3 point snowblower on end to save space, but the gearbox on it has a vent hole on top that will leak when you stand it up.

Hmmm, do you think the 1/2" rods can handle the 72" deck weight? If so, then the plan outlined in these threads would work very well and is a lot cheaper than purchasing the ready made ones.

Built my first set of wheel stands out of conduit, lead pipe and no flat wheels - cost me about 60 bucks - no flats were $9.99 each x 4. Works very well!

I am in process of building a mower deck rack and was curious as to how you held the axles from moving in the gage wheel holder? Your reply would be appreciated. Thanks..

The JD deck has spring loaded pins with levers to set the gage wheels. I just trip the lever and the friction of the pin on the axle holds it more or less in place. It sometimes moves a little but hasn't been a problem. If it was a problem I considered grinding some flats on the axles to locate the pins but it hasn't been necessary.

Any one considering this, Harbor Freight has a super coupon on the 10" wheels for $3.77 each. It's good through 11/28 and the coupon number is 95785040.

I simply drilled a hole in the axle where I wanted it to be, matching the latch pin for the height adjustment of the gage wheels.

I'll add, what a great tool. Now my mower deck takes up minimal space and can be stored in the shop where it belongs rather than sitting outside. Such a simple build and yet so very useable and productive. :)

I also built a set of deck wheel dollies for my older JD 60" deck, much like the set up in post #4...
Two lengths of 1 1/4" OD tube about 16" long
Two lengths of 1/2" hot rolled bar stock..
Four old walk behind mower wheels 5 or 6" diameter..
A little time with a band saw, drill press, and some bent nails for cotter pins..
Washers and two hair pin clips..

Total about $6 and a little time..
Not pretty, but useful..
Besides, in the back corner of the garage, no one else sees it..

Good luck..

Does anyone have any idea as to what to use for a 1" diameter axle on a JD 60D mower deck? All of the 3/4"steel pipe and conduit are over 1" in diameter...

I simply used 1" solid round stock and turned the ends down to my bearing diameter for two wheels on the one axle. A simple job for any machine shop. Or you could shop around for 1" DOM (drawn over mandrel) tubing.
Casters on one axle are nice too while you're at it.Deck caster1.jpg

Pipe is generally measured on the inside. Solid stock is generally measured on the outside. So to get 1" diameter material, you'll probably hafta go to solid stock.

A 3/4" pipe should be 1.05" outside diameter. You could just grind a little on the end you are putting into the deck tube.

This is what I did for mine:

The only machining required was to round off the corners of the four nuts so that they slide into the mount on the deck. The gap between the two sets of nuts let me use the height adjusters to prevent the axle from sliding out.

The components are 5/8 threaded rod and 1/2" galvanized pipe.

I've used this for three years with no problems at all.
Hope this helps.
