Mulching kit

How well do the mulching kits work? I have a 445 jd with 60" belly mower. Kinda like the idea of mulching, but don't know if it is a pain if the grass gets just a little long. They seem kind of expensive too.

I bought a mulching kit from my JD dealer for the LX176 I bought my daughter used a couple of years ago. Had no problem installing it, and it works great. We frequently don't cut her lawn as often as we should, and have no problem with the clipings unless the grass is really thick and really high. The just going over the worst spots a time or two does a pretty good job of chopping up the grass it left the first time. Had no problem ordering the mulcher, even for a 14 year old machine.

I have a JD 425 with a 54" deck. Got it with the mulching kit installed. I used it for about 5 years. Then I took it off. Never liked the cut it gave and the deck will choke and regurgitate big piles when the grass is heavy and/or wet. Tractor never stalled, as you know, they are quite powerful. The one piece of the kit that is nice is the rubber shroud that goes around the front of the mower deck. Makes the vacuum effect more useful. But, I say don't waste your money on the whole kit.

However, if you have a lot of leaves and don't want to rake or vacuum, the mulching kit is good for that. A couple of passes and the leaves are finally pulverized.

Too bad mine is too small for you, I'd just about give it away just to get the parts out of my barn.

Well, maybe I'm not as excited then. The 60" deck on the 445 isn't too much, but tall grass is too much. Sounds like mulching would be for only light cuts. Hmmm.
