Because I would not want to be thought of as either lazy or inconsiderate, I'm thinking about removing my rear bumper anytime my truck is not being driven. That thing sticks out a good six inches.

...I also found that to get close enough to walk into someone else's hitch you have to be completely on top of the vehicle in the first place... Made me wonder how many here have in fact walked into someone else's hitch.
This is what bugs me. I never would have imagined there was a problem with folks banging their shins on someone else's hitch. How close do you need to be to their vehicle to do that?!? How do you avoid rubbing down their tailgate as you scooch by? And if your jacket is open so the zipper is scraping along, or the key ring hanging off your belt, the metal rivet on your jeans...
I understand the other rational arguments like because you don't want it to rust or get stolen. But someone may bang into it? Well, quit damaging the paint job on my truck and it won't be a problem.
Yup if the can bang into it, their arm or something I rubbing down my truck, lil you said, keys tivits, etc. Only reason to be that close is to look into the back of my truck to snoop? On the flip side, my truck is farm used so it has plenty of scratches. But if you rub down the side of my truck not only will your shin hurt, but you will need to wash your shirt and pants!
Went to get my truck inspected yesterday and apparently its the "law" here in Nova Scotia to pull the hitch!
Guy doing the inspection said that its a $2xx.00 fine![]()
Came home and looked online but could not find a specific MV statute about unused hitches but there is a section under MV inspections and protruding devices like hitches. So its likely not the police who will fine you, but DOT Compliance. I cant see it applying to consumer vehicles unless you did something really stupid and DOT really wanted to have a talk to you, but commercial guys could very well be hit by this.

I came out of a Dollar store today and saw a parked police van with a hitch platform sticking out about 16" x 36" wide from his hitch. I didn't see anyone run into that even though there weren't any cones around it.

I think the inspector was stretching the application of section 200 a little too far. I read that to be more for loose chrome or flopping fenders.
Police seem to be exempt from following the laws.... I often see them with their cell phone to their ear (illegal here, hands free devices only) as they pass by going well over the speed limit with no lights flashing... guess having a hitch or other rear bumper object is ok for them, right?
