So I put together what I would consider a sizable package deal. It consists of the tractor with a Q.A. H.D. F.E.L. with replaceable cutting edge , extra valve and plumbing, ice chains, logging winch, wood splitter, Wallenstein 42 chipper, and a 7ft rake. I spoke with my local dealer and he worked up a quote. when I got it I checked on pricing of all the components separately from different dealers and learned that he hadn't cut me and discount. I then ran the numbers with a 5% off the total price to come up with my offer. He stated "his price is the best he can do" and started telling me about service and such. I have heard nothing but good things about this dealers service and have no reason to doubt it. I also know that is a important factor in choosing a dealer. But 5%? He stated his pricing right out of the gate is as good as they can do...............I added 10.000 bucks worth of add ons not including the F.E.L. seems 5% should or could happen. I am not at the take it or leave it stage yet but I am no fan of cat and mouse B.S. any input from people in my area who have been in my shoes? this is my first new tractor purchase so I don't know how it goes. any help would be appreciated.

If I was you, I would contact Barlow Equipment and get a competitive offer for your hard earned dollars. I was very pleased with my experience with Brady and the gang for my MX5100 w/ FEL, 4WD, rotary tiller and trailer. I save mucho $$.

There are some folks on TBN that have way more "wheelin' and dealin' " experience with tractors than I do, but I figure your 5% offer was generous to begin with. I would have considered something near 10% to be a truly competitive discount.

That said, there are dealers out there that don't bargain on price... they plan to sell at MSRP, figuring it's worth running off some buyers because they make it up on the others. If they have enough full price customers to keep their business going that way, well, bless their hearts, but I'll keep shopping, thank you.

There are also some who figure on doing some haggling, particularly with a new customer, so they start high, and wait for you to play their game. If you are willing to put up with the BS, as you aptly described it, you may get a better deal... eventually.

There are also some dealers who will work to earn your business with good prices and good service. I'll go out of my way to support someone like that with repeat business.

Always remember that every tractor dealer is an independent businessman. Some are good, some are great, some are not so good. Good luck in your shopping.

When I went shopping for a tractor I tried to negotiate with my local dealer and they would not budge. They acted as though they were doing me a favor to even consider selling me a tractor. I started web shopping and ended up talking to Brady Barlow at Barlow Tractor. I ended up buying 2 tractors from him and have since bought a few pieces of equipment. Everything was negotiated over the computer and phone. Then it was delivered to my house all cheaper than I could buy locally. Contact them at Barlow Tractor and at least get a price to compare your previous quote to.

My take on the "we offer great service" saying is this: Don't you get paid for your service? Maybe they do offer timely service, but that is no excuse to not be in line with other dealers. And no counter offer at all...geesh.....I would take others advice and check elsewhere, with all that you're buying, there should be some kind of a discount...5% seems minimum to me if it is MSRP....more like shoot for 10% or more IMHO. When you do buy it from someone else maybe stop by afterward and politely ask them if they would like to service your equipment, when they ask why you didn't buy it there you can politely explain they got a fair shot. You lose nothing but maybe helping out someone else that they may be trying to sell "service" to. Good luck.

I sure can't beat the advice so far; I would go elsewhere myself.

As to service, we do most of our own anyway.
