I went for a morning walk yesterday to enjoy the snow and took a quick picture of one of the springs.

We are at a stopping point in the house. The stone fill was placed in the foundation. My cement guy likes for it to settle for a few days before mechanical compaction. Also it is so cold the tape wont seal well on the insulation And plastic sheeting. IMG_8156.JPG

Well, that's real nice. There's something about a spring that just feels good. That one looks like one of the typical small perculation springs that are formed when there is an underground connection through porous media to some higher perched water table. If that is the case, the water quality will depend on whatever filtration & mineralization is happening as the the water is traveling to get there, and also on the state of the upper supply.
You are lucky being in Va, as they are one of the states that has a program that maps and documents springs - that is, if you want to go that way. Or if you just want to use the water without gov't help, there are lots of publications that show how to properly develop a spring box. https://wvdhhr.org/phs/forms/SW-252c,_Springs.pdf
The idea behind a spring box is to slightly increase the rate of flow while cleaning up the quality. Making one is simple to do and works well. Before chlorination, spring water was the best there was. Some still think so. You could make a proper spring box and then have the water tested yourself for a reasonable fee.
I test ours every couple of years by sending a sample to a local lab at the university.
luck,
rScotty

That is looking great. We used that foam on the inside of our foundation and it does a great job.

Y'all enjoying the cold weather? I see some brutal overnight temps coming up for that area.

My wife and I have been on the land the last two nights and will be ringing in the new year here tonight. Low last night was projected at 16 f. And rhe current temp is low 20's. Tonight will be 12f. The camper is doing a great job of keeping us warm. But with these temps, cooking and bathing get primitive. Plumbing is winterized to prevent damage to the pipes and holding tanks. I had a porto-john delivered and we do the majority of our cooking outside to prevent filling the camper with food smells. When this venture is over, we will be selling it and want to maintain as much value as possible.
While the house build is stalled, there are many other tasks on the farm. Yesterday we put a metal roof on a storage shed that we had rebuilt and today we are heading back out to put osb on the walls. I have been meaning to start a thread about the rebuild of this shed, which was an8x8 hunting shack when we bought the land. Roof and floor were rotted out and windows were never installed but were onsite and broken. I began tearing it down and discovered that the bones were in decent shape. The location is convenient to store hand tools so i decided to rebuild it and tripled the footprint. One side has had osb on the walls and the roof has had osb and underlayment for several months so it has already proven to be convenient to keep tools and supplies out of the weather.

I appreciate the kind words, Wakey. I like keeping track of the work done, and it also lets me bounce ideas off other like minded folks to help me improve my process. In addition, almost everything I have done like this, over the years, I have learned to do from books or from online resources, so documenting the things I do and putting that bit of information back out to help others is just returning the favor.

I also started the thread on the shed rebuild. It was too darn cold to go outside this morning to work.
