Spreader Need a Spreader

Started this in Wanted but I think it will belong here. Another project.

Got some pictures. I can probably get it for nothing. It is a McCormick Deering 100 that has had the metal sides replaced. It would certainly be a project.
I want to use it to lay down 400cy of chips on a walking trail. Probably don't need the beaters, the apron chains are missing but may be available $300-500
Wheels are gone . Can use a hyd motor to run the apron chains. Has possibilities but only if I can get it for nothing.

If you need new apron chain, here is a link to Shoup parts. Shoup Manufacturing Company I got new chain for my little Cobey spreader there about 7 or 8 years ago. I just bought the detachable link chain, and made up my own. If the cross bars are there, they even have the attachment links for those, and rivets. I just heated the rivets with my O/A torch, and hammered them out flat.
I believe I would go ahead and chain up at least the top and bottom beaters, and use the ground drive. That little bit of spreading action may save a lot of handwork, as it may just drop it out in piles.

Or..., maybe check on Craigslist.. Around here there are more than several useable small spreaders of that size in the $400.00 to $600.00 range. Some larger ones in the $800.00 range... Of course..., that's not saying they don't need new apron chains either...

I wish you had not brought that up. I had forgot that I have a rear unload silage wagon that I have been putting off fixing since last years corn picking season. Floor chain broke on last load we picked. Maybe I should get after it before it gets too hot! Ken Sweet

I showed my wife the pictures of the McCormick and she said " you have more important things to do than make that thing work. Can't you spend more and get something that works" Hot Dog.
As I said before I have to spread wood chips. I thought about a Kory running gear , new, with a dump body on it but I started up my TLB today and tried to dump chips evenly 4-5' wide. Forget it back to a spreader something 40" wide or so.

Any chance a local dealer would rent you a good used one..??

Got to agree on replacing the apron chains... But unloading a spreader that is yet, 90% loaded is worse.

A small come-a-long was a big help doing mine.

I think I am going to give up on a spreader. Old ones need too much work and there are not many farm equipment auctions in SE NY where there might be a newer one. Not many equipment dealers around here with trade in's either. So I am now looking towards a dump wagon. I can make it work somehow.
Does any one here have any experience with any of the equipment in the attachments. Probably looking for a 4' x 8' box with 1.5 -2 ft sides 3000-4000 lb load capacity. yard and 1/2 dirt or 2 yards of chips. What works better double tandem wheels kind of in the middle or wheels at each corner with the front axle steerable. This would be low speed , woods roads.

Kory is Kory They don't make a dump body but the running gear looks good.
Any body have any experience with any of these.
I would be towing with a NH TC 34 Hydro .

You can buy small ~75-100 bu barge box or flare box wagons with hoists all day long around here that look similar to your 2nd picture for $100-400. I have one I haul corn in, and have hauled dirt, but it doesn't slide out well. Got lucky once and picked up a NH 135 PTO drive spreader that needed some welding, tires and a floor for free...use that to haul mulch and compost now. Sure beats bags.

We sold a nice 6X12 dump wagon last week for $500. It had a adjustable slide door at the rear and a 1 line hyd hose to operate the dump. We used it a lot when my Son was building his new house. Handy for keeping small scraps off the jobsite during construction and easy to offload. Ken Sweet

I have been trying to find a 2 ton off the road dump wagon. I find 3000# and 5000# . The 3000# looks about the right size 48-50" wide 70-80 " long
12-18 high sides. I mostly want to move wood chips. Make the sides higher. The tree guys found me and I can get all I want. Trails 5-6 ' wide in solid woods.
So Pronovost has one , no cylinder , $3070 list local dealer. There is another one Mighty dumper John B M mfg. Dealers are 60-70 miles away and it is also Canadian as is Pronovost. Probably same price. I keep looking. King Kutter at TSC same thing $1800 with cylinder and hand pump. hmm say welds brake or brackets bend. I can fix them. I don't need the hand pump, maybe I can get it with out. Probably not. I may have a hand pump for sale.

If you already have trailer just a thought of something that i once saw and might be easier/cheaper especially if you only need it for 1 project

2 bearings and a rod attached to the back side of the trailer just below the loadbed.

Attached to this rod a strong tarp (as used on truck trailers) as wide as the loadbed and twice the lenght of the loadbed.

Put the tarp in the loadbed with the extra lenght running over the front side of the trailer.
load trailer

unload by driving the rod (manually, hydraulics?, ) and rolling the tarp onto the rod.

Its a cheapo variant of a rolling loadfloor as found on chip trailers here. Works for chips and firewood, probably also for anything else.

even cheaper is to have a tarp hanging out of the back of the trailer far enough that if you drive backwards the trailerwheels will drive on it. Just reverse and unload...

I have a McCormick-Deering 100 spreader in NE conn if you're interested.
No rot, everything works. Been in our garage for years. It could use a new tire, but other than that, it's plug and play.
