Need help welding hooks

This is my Kioti, used 1/8 inch 7018 rod at 125 amps DC.. If you had some 7018AC that is what I would recommend and the 125 amp setting is what I would use. I can't imagine 175 or more amps with any 3/32 rod. Here is the Miller calculator you can use to get you in the ballpark for setting your current. You can see the bevel on the weld on hooks that the others spoke of in the second photo.

That sounds more in the ballpark of what I use..

I just can't figure why you use the Miller calculator instead of a Green Chinese one???

Did you like my welds, with my Chinese welder?:)

By there is a free "app" for the Miller weld calculator on the Android store. I would imagine there is one for Apple IOS also.

The hooks are forged 3/8 chain hooks that I cut the clevis end off and ground the bottom flat.

Well that might be a problem. Try welding with the right type of welding rod, and the right current and see if that helps. Those hooks might not be able to be welded properly. I would get hooks that are made to be welded on.

I would grind a bevel all the way around them, making sure the galvanizing is gone,(if it had it) and get some 7018AC and give them a try. Of course purchasing the correct weld on hooks to start with would have been better, but these are what he has, and I think they will work if prepped correctly and welded correctly. My 2 centavos.

I must give credit where it is due ...

Your beads do look very nice!

Did you notice the factory welds that weld that little pad to the bucket? I think that if anything rips off it will be the factory weld. I actually though about grinding off the paint and going over that factory weld, but I didn't do it. But I reckon it will hold anything the loader will lift anyway.

Wow! Whata bunch of quick responses. The hooks are forged 3/8 chain hooks that I cut the clevis end off and ground the bottom flat.

I used the same hooks on my bucket. Cut off the clevis end then put a bevel on the part of the hooks to be welded then welded them on with 3 passes of 1/8" 7018 using DC. I also beefed up the bucket with a piece of 3/16" angle across the top edge though the LS bucket really didn't need extra metal. So far I've lifted over 1500 lb with the hooks and pulled a 5500 lb truck out of a mud hole without failure so those type hooks will work fine.
