4 hours and how much $$$?

Pros aren't always pros. They have to start somewhere. Here are some pics.

It was around $1,000.00 for the job, crane about 2 hours, bucket truck, chipper, 2 men for the 4 hours. Of course I only live about 10 miles from the tree cutter so travel time is minimal. I guess he is a pro as he has been at it for over 30 years and the boys just took over. He also does work for the cities in our area.

I would call your local tree guys and get some bids. That is the only sure way to nail the cost down.

I had a 50 foot sugar maple that broke off in a storm at the base and was hung up in another tree. Near some phone lines so was not a do it yourselfer. Called two companies with bucket trucks for estimates and got one at $500 and one for over $1000 just to drop it and leave it. Thought they were both high so I kept looking. Found a tree guy (one man show type), said he could do it for $120. Told him to go ahead. Came home from work while he was finishing up. Guy was swinging suspended from a rope with a chain saw in one hand, tree climbing spikes on his leg, limbs tied off all over and moving around like a monkey. I thought he was nuts but I was impressed as heck - obviously knew what he was doing. He did what he said he would. I tipped him 20 bucks because I thought he undercharged me. Look around - you might find someone reasonable to just limb it and drop it for you, then you do the clean up. Look for a small operation. The bigger outfits have a lot of equipment aka a lot of overhead and they have to charge accordingly.

Good job... :D no, sorry, GREAT job... How did it feel once it was on the ground?!?!?! Any advice for the rest of us?? Look like you nailed the spot... between the carport and another pecan.

I have to say I was looking towards the crushed carport or better yet, house photos :D

Well congratulations on a good job. DGood photos, too. But damned if I'd 'a done it, and I'm fearless! I do hate big unpredictable standing trees, and despite having a couple hosest to god chainsaws and a tractor (and I've always had chainsaws and some sort of tractor, so it's not a novelty), I would have paid someone to drop it! -WSJ

Most of the time it works that easy, but I can tell you that each of us who warned you against doing it without experience has a very sad story to tell. Maybe we under estimated your caution, or possibly our caution gave you reason to pause, but I am not impressed by one tree.

(sorry jmfox) "...I am not impressed by one tree..." I am... saved him a ton of money, lucky? yea, maybe. I was lucky once, had to open the gate of a fence to fell a tree... the guy said "I don't care about the fence". Every time I fell a tree, I'll put a stake in the ground to see if I hit my mark (distance and direction). Congrats!!

I agree with much that has been said. If you have to ask you should get someone else to do it. How do I know? Been there, hurt that. Want motivation I'll e-mail you some pics on my hand. Look up "degloving injury" if you want an idea of what I'm talking about. I was lucky, I prabably shouldn't be here.

Nothing is more expensive than regret

Yeah, she fell right where I wanted :) I am too much of a miser to pay someone for something I can do, and I like the challenge. Now that the fun is over, somebody's gotta cut 'er up..:(

I haven't measured, but it may be more than 36"s. Now I have one less tree to mow around!!
