Need Some Trailer Advice

I've only owned one gooseneck and didn't pull it very often. I never did get near as good at backing it as I am with a bumper pull. A GN is way better for towing if you don't have to haul anything in the bed, at present I have a Bigfoot camper, but that may change, so another GN may be in the future.

Well I just sold mine. 34' flatbed with tandem duals, $4,000. I think that is a little more trailer than what you were looking for. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

jcmseven, I have a few observation or statements to add to all the great responses. My trailering history is only bumper pulls so I'm sorry can't give you any personal experiences with goosenecks or 5th wheel hookups. I run a F350 with a V10 I get 12 mpg and only have bumper pull trailers, 4 of them and yes I regret not getting the diesel. You asked about resale value, I say it absolutely effects your resale if it were me looking at used trucks the second I see a 5th wheel/ gooseneck or even a heavily used bumper mount receiver hitch or if I notice heavy trailers that would fit the used vehicles hitch setup sitting around the persons yard I would walk away, I want to be the one who abuses the truck by pulling heavier stuff then its rated to pull and there are plenty of used F350/250's around that although most have at least a 2" recieve have never or rarely towed anything. Also and let me say upfront that I wish I didn't love camper shells because I would much prefer a gooseneck/5th wheel hitch, that somebody posted that you can back them up even to the point of beyond 90 degrees yes you can but you better know your trailer and truck well, when that trailer connects with the back of your cab you'll understand a whole lot better while your picking the pieces of glass from the back window out of your hide just like my FIL did on vacation last year. I'll probably get hit with the your FIL is a dumba## but he's actually a very smart guy who just didn't know his limits and didn't get out to look, the point is be aware this can happen and if you get a gooseneck take it to a parking lot and back it up and find out what your limits are instead of finding out the hard way plus if the trailer is going up a hill backwards this will change your limits so get out and look you'll have a much better day.

I would like to thank all those who gave such excellent advice regarding my purchase of a new trailer. In the end, I went with the bumper pull, mainly due to the limited frequency of pulling I do, and my desire to use the bed on occasion while pulling. While I am not into brand promotion, except John Deere I suppose (just kidding), I would say to the group I bought a "Gator-made" brand trailer, which apparently is made in KY. Our local trailer dealer just began selling them, and has had good luck so far. I bought the 18' with two 6000# axles, so it should have no problem carrying my 4520 JD; in fact, I do not believe the tractor could fit on it better. The Gator trailer has a few nice features in a trailer like this including a heavy duty jack stand, vertical ramps and a nice steel lip around the entire deck. It also has nice features like a bump guard around the lights and is electrostatically primed and painted, rather than just painted. In all, I felt a really nice looking trailer for not much more than some that lacked remotely the same features. So far, it pulls well, mostly on short trips, but we will be testing more this weekend with a longer trip. To me, this would be a good trailer to consider for those who are looking at a medium duty equipment trailer.
