Need / want a pickup truck

How often do you plan to haul it? Almost any truck based vehicle would handle that without a problem.

Very rarely, so it would not be the primary need. On rare occasions when it may have to go to the dealer about 80 miles away over a mix of two lane rural roads with hills and interstate highway. Would probably rent a trailer for that if prices were right.

Primary would be local/shopping, hauling lumber, etc.

Don't understand the multi-images/charts post or what it's trying to explain. Sort of Perot-ish I guess.

OUCH on the mileage our old 460 did better than that empty - thats similar to V10 mileage and my old 85 windsor H.O. and those both only had a C6 with no O/D

I dont think i could take it watching my fuel gauge go down like that i would have an anxiety attack

Regarding the 5.0 vs EcoBoost - my neighbor has 5 different businesses and trades vehicles regularly. He keeps an F150 for himself and drags a box trailer for his motorcycles and flatbeds for his business and hauls other things - he bought a 2015 F150 and he said he didnt like it for pulling his trailers, so he gave it to his son and got a 2017 5.0 and loved it, he retired in 2017 and they travel to FL in the winter an he is here in teh summer. He has a 3/4 flatbed he leaves at the house now for trips to home depot etc.....He just traded ( torn he said ) for a Expedition MAX 2018 used. He said he may kick himself but for a winter vehicle in florida he wanted something bigger than his wifes Buick so they will drag it behind their Diesel Pusher to FL.

Ouch is right. I dont advocate for a diesel often as most recreational users of trucks dont need them, but at 8mpg on a gasser I would be getting a diesel, my 2012 6.7 powerstroke got about 17 dont matter what you put on it, fuel savings alone in that situation would make sense.

For some a trailer is a lousy option. I am one of those. I cannot back up a trailer. Then you need to hook it up and unhook it. And you need a place to store it.

I currently have a 2015 F150 SuperCab and it works well. Plenty of interior storage with the rear seats folded up and I love the flat floor. The bed has a folding cover that is on and off in 15 minutes and it is a one person job even for this old man.

Like most things in life, one size does not fit all. I hate trailers because I am incompetent. I use them only when there is no other option.

Very true thats why we got options. Although I opt for a soft trifold, works just as well, and is a 1 min job to take on and off

The new F 150 D get 30 hyway and 25 city. That is very attractive to me and it can tow 11500. I don't often need to haul more than that it also has a 2,000 pound payload. Not sure what the GCVWR is
The drawback with D is the increased cost of maintenence and initial cost over a gasser

Even with the higher upfront cost and higher maintenance cost a diesel could still make sense for some, but when you then factor in the high cost of diesel vs gasoline which probably averages around 15%, around here at least, the payback on a diesel (if there even IS one) is so far out that it's hard to justify.

I had trouble killing the areostar untill i got a 4L engine all wheel drive one. Was a rocket ship and i launched it frequently. Wore out three drive trains except for the engine all replaced by Ford at no cost. I got rid of it at well over 200k. The final drivetrain had been improved by Ford to the point it could handle my abuse. Great little vans.
Ford made a flail mower? gonna have to see if i can find one. I own an old 1973 ford 2000 d tractor with several implements also Ford all still going strong and used every year

If I go to town and don’t need a trailer or a pickup for parts I take my 2014 Explorer and then I don’t have to worry about parking.

I drive a Silverado extended cab and 6 foot bed for work, and a 2004 Ranger for my own truck which is much easier to get around with both in town and off road. Yet it rides like an 8N Ford, gets worse mileage than the full sized Chevy, has much less space both in the cab and in the bed; and costs just as much for each repair.
FWIW my employer runs a fleet of about 50 vehicles, mostly half ton GM products and Toyota Tundras. The numbers guy told me that over the course of the 3 years that we keep them, the operating costs of each brand are the same.
That sums it up.

I bet the toyotas have less often, more expensive repairs.

I would get the gm because of the parts availability.

They quit making the ranger because the math didnt work.
