The trouble with letting your saw shop do it is that they almost always put the least experienced peon in the shop on that job. The work usually varies between questionable and downright bad, like receiving back almost-new chains with half of their life ground away.
Or their sharpening machine may just use a weird geometry, so when you go back to sharpening like a man, you have to remove lots of metal to get back to normal.

My Oregon electric sharpener works fast and makes a sharp chain when done. Cant tell the difference from new factory chain. I control the bite, so i barely takes off any metal.
The standard advice is one sharpening per tank, so if I used a machine, I would have to drive back to the shop over and over.

They should adjust their machine to the profile of each chain. But I suspect all use the same 30/60/10-degree angles specified for Stihl RS chain, that and its various derivatives being so dominant for so many years.

I have a bad habit of finding ceramic service wire hanger insulators. I can usually feel when I hit a bolt, but the ceramic feels much smoother as the chain rides it, and can dull a chain every bit as well as metal.
There is a $150 metal detector called a Lumber Wizard. Where I live, everyone uses plank fences, so I don't run into metal, but other people say it works.

Most seem to follow a sharpening or chain swap every second tank. For me, usually rotating between three saws, I usually swap the chain on any saw that's seen a lot of use in the morning, when we break for lunch. I hand filed for many years, but gave it up when I bought a bench-mounted chain grinder.

I would have been happy if they had just left the chain alone, like I told them to.

I have a much better repair place now, but if I ever go to another one, I'll leave my chain at home where they can't ruin it.

Typically the law requires you to deal with anything that falls on your land. It may not be what you want to hear, but it's true. There is an exception for a tree known to be unsound.

I have had all sorts of trees go over fences. Either I fix them myself or I work with my neighbors. No point in calling an insurance company for something we can do for nothing in an hour or two. I never even heard of the idea of using insurance until now. That would be a royal pain.
Not to mention another excuse to raise rates on one or both of you.

I have only had one insurance claim in 53 years of driving. In 2015 I had hail damage on a 1996 Lincoln. Perfect Condition and was destroyed.
Insurance paid me $3,500 they raised my rates $600 a year.
I asked why, told me because of your claim!
Thats Wrong!!

I keep 3 sharpened chains with me while cutting. After the 3rd is getting dull, i sharpen all 3 in prep for next cutting. Doesnt take too long. Also, good to blow out all gunk in saw and clean air filters while im at it. This unit brings chains up to like new conditions.
