I hope the machine shop provides you with a free head gasket kit also. If they don't have to participate in any labor costs(remove and reinstall heads and intake manifold), they should be happy to throw in the head gasket kit. Good luck

Well that makes it a little hard to diagnose the problem when the heads were ruled out from the start . They sound like crooks to me . One of our used furniture dealers would buy used whitegoods and broom the spider webs out from underneath and resell as reconditioned . The guy was bragging to me about it , i said what happens if one blows up ? He shrugged and said on the rare occasion that happens we just give them another one , but we are allways way in front . Hmmmm .

I just got to ask.

What is "used whitegoods"

Why would it blow up?

In hindsight i probably did not explain myself well with this statement . The comparison i was drawing was that some engine builders and others will tell you they have done something they have not and charge for that work . If on the off chance something goes wrong they simply fix it as they are well ahead as it has worked in their favour many times before . I have been caught before myself buying a "Tested good" used automatic transmission from a wrecking yard . After i spent money on a new filter and oil and spent 3 hours fitting it , i find on a test drive it has problems . After i took it back they through it into the boot of the car it came out of and said they would exchange it for another . I'm standing there looking at this car that is bent like a Bannana which could not possibly have been test driven . It turned out that " I " was the one that tested it .

No worries on thinking the guy is a crook. I sort of had my doubts when the problems started, and that's why I asked the tractor dealers that I know who they use and who they recomend. He has a solid reputation, he's a scout leader that does allot with the kids and the comunty and nobody that I could find has anything negative to say about him. He has about ten guys working for him in the shop, so it's anybodies guess who did the work, or if he even works there anymore. He gave me a six month warrentee on the work when he did my entire engine. This is two years later and he never said anything about the time or questioned how many hours that I had on it. He found it hard to believe that his shop had done that work, and I think he was embaressed about it. I dont' know. What I do know is he did it again and said he used better parts then the previous time. It would have been nice to not have to deal with this, but having him fix it for free is really all I can ask of the guy, and I didn't even have to ask. He just did it. Gaskets, my time and the suffering of having to deal with this again is all out of my pocket, but that's just part of life. If I had brought it into a shop and paid a mechanic to rebuild the engine and this happened, then I'd expect the mechanic to do all the work too. In this case, I'm satisfied with the way it was handled and will use his services again.

I got it back to gether today and had it running for awhile. It sounds nice and smooth, but I'm burning oil off the block and exhaust manifolds. Some of that is spilling from the 5 quart oil containers when I put the new oil in, and some is from the old leaks before this rebuild. I'm hoping that's all it is and there isn't any more oil leaks.

There was a fuel leak at the carburator. Where the inline fuel filter goes right into the float bowl, the gasoline was dripping out. It wasn't very tight and that might have been the problem. I took it off and replaced the white plastic washer with an o-ring. That didn't work. The o-ring just broke when I started to tighten it up. I then used that teflon thread sealler stuff that I bought for the four intake manifold bolts that go through my cylinder heads. It's pricey stuff, so hopefully it will help seal that plastic washer thing. I put it back together just before I had to quit for dinner.

It's good that he's done the heads , but it's not for free . You have allready paid for that to have been done . Now it's cost downtime , more worry and more money to have it corrected . If i were him i'd have been under your hood personally doing the right thing . But your happy with the deal and that's all that matters . :) I still can't see how the valve guides were causing the billowing smoke . Worn guides usually only suck in oil going downhill with your foot off or after giving it a big rev and taking your foot off and not while working as you were . We will never really know if it was the intake manifold gaskets leaking or the guides as both are now new .

Where people work, mistakes are being made. Those who dont work at all, make the biggest mistake ! ;)

Good to hear you got it sorted out.. Good luck with the truck ;)

Here is a picture of the dump truck in operation again. My dad was driving it while I loaded it. I haven't drivin it yet, so all I can tell you is what he said, and he said that it drives better now then ever before.

I put the intake gasket in dry, but did use teflon sealer on the four bolts that go through the cylinder head. Don't know if that did anything or not.

A few times at start up, it would have white smoke, but tha would clear up after a minute. It also smells of gasoline, so I'm thinking I have too much fuel going into the it. I'll have to check the float level and mixture.
