No worries on thinking the guy is a crook. I sort of had my doubts when the problems started, and that's why I asked the tractor dealers that I know who they use and who they recomend. He has a solid reputation, he's a scout leader that does allot with the kids and the comunty and nobody that I could find has anything negative to say about him. He has about ten guys working for him in the shop, so it's anybodies guess who did the work, or if he even works there anymore. He gave me a six month warrentee on the work when he did my entire engine. This is two years later and he never said anything about the time or questioned how many hours that I had on it. He found it hard to believe that his shop had done that work, and I think he was embaressed about it. I dont' know. What I do know is he did it again and said he used better parts then the previous time. It would have been nice to not have to deal with this, but having him fix it for free is really all I can ask of the guy, and I didn't even have to ask. He just did it. Gaskets, my time and the suffering of having to deal with this again is all out of my pocket, but that's just part of life. If I had brought it into a shop and paid a mechanic to rebuild the engine and this happened, then I'd expect the mechanic to do all the work too. In this case, I'm satisfied with the way it was handled and will use his services again.
I got it back to gether today and had it running for awhile. It sounds nice and smooth, but I'm burning oil off the block and exhaust manifolds. Some of that is spilling from the 5 quart oil containers when I put the new oil in, and some is from the old leaks before this rebuild. I'm hoping that's all it is and there isn't any more oil leaks.
There was a fuel leak at the carburator. Where the inline fuel filter goes right into the float bowl, the gasoline was dripping out. It wasn't very tight and that might have been the problem. I took it off and replaced the white plastic washer with an o-ring. That didn't work. The o-ring just broke when I started to tighten it up. I then used that teflon thread sealler stuff that I bought for the four intake manifold bolts that go through my cylinder heads. It's pricey stuff, so hopefully it will help seal that plastic washer thing. I put it back together just before I had to quit for dinner.
