If it's rebuild time will it be increase HP time for the conditions the truck will operate in?:D

Egon,

Sorry, I don't unerstand the question.

When I bought the truck a year ago, it had enough power to haul 6 yards around the land, but had trouble going up steep hills. No biggy, I just found different routes. Then it just kept loosing power. New plugs made a huge difference, but they fouled up realy, realy fast.

The gearing is low enough that I've been able to run it without very much power, but Dad and I are both exited about what it will be like to drive with all 8 cylinders fireing.

Another thing I forgot to mention is the timing chain was stretched to the extreme. It's a wonder I could time it. Easily an inch or more of play in either direction!!!!

Hi Eddie, how many miles are on that truck? Your timing chain comment caught me. I was listing all the PM things I should do on my truck (460 gas) and one guy mentioned the timing chain. I hadn't thought of that at only 130K, but maybe I should?

Rob,

The engine says it only has 56,000 miles, but they are either very hard miles or it's totally wrong. I think both.

I'm not much of a mechanic, so I don't know how to check for a worn timing chain. I kind of thought mine was bad before I took it apart, but never imagined that it cold stretch that far and still run. It never jumped a tooth, so maybe that's what kept it running.

If I was you, I'd start a new thread and ask for advice from the other members here. There are some mechanics that are very helpful and know there stuff. I be one of them could help you figure out if it's bad or not.

Taking it out and changing it while the engine is still in your truck is gonna be a realy tough job. Not something I'd want to tackle unless I was positive it needed replacing.

Good luck,
Eddie

Eddie, I was thinking of a different cam spec'd for low speed torque and a carb to accompany it. Maybe a change in compression ratios,

Eddie,
Since you have the motor apart, replace the timing chain and gears. All timing chains will stretch once they have a few miles on them. Once installed, a new chain and gear set will have very little play compared to maybe a half inch or so of a well used one. If you can grab the chain between the gears with two fingers and move it a half inch or more its time to change. Some cam gears had nylon teeth on them that would show wear as well others are all steel. I'm sure the truck has seen some rough service. Most older engines usually were due for a timing chain and gear by 70K miles or sooner for heavy service use. Newer motors today are built to much tighter tolerances and get many more miles than motors of 30 or more years ago. As far as the cam goes, the lobe height should measure similar for intakes and exhaust. A quick visual while holding the cam horizontal in front of you the top of each lobe should be straight across, not crowned or rounded. Your machine shop can check it to see if its in spec.
Good luck on your latest project.

George,

Thank you. The chain was wasted.

The latest news is the block is no good. It's already been bored out .60 thousands and it's well worn out beyond that. There is a place in Dallas with one for $250 that is guranteed to be in good shape and never bored out.

I'm sending my Dad and Mom on a road trip Monday to pick it up while I'm rebuilding a cylinder on the backhoe. ( the oil leak )

Rob- A side note on timing chains, I have a Ford Mustang with ~114k miles and the venerable fiber gears. I installed a new all steel timing gear/chain set and it felt like I bolted on 50 extra hp, substaintial difference in power.

I have seen those cracked flywheels on a Ford 8210 at a contractor i worked when i was 16, about 7 years ago. That tractor did 9800 hrs and was tuned up to make it smoke like a steamboat. It had 4 gears worn out, 1 transmission shaft ground thin, a cracked flywheel and it jumped out of gear. The power estimated at 130 hp (instead of 110 off factory) , was too much for the smaller Basildon built rear end and clutch.

When i was in Canada 2 years ago, i drove my uncle/cousin IH Loadstar. (It's my cousin but age wise he could be my uncle) i think it was a 4600 ?? with grain box. I wasnt quite aware of it being a grain box, so i loaded it full of rocks to use as a porch foundation, because my cousin wanted a foundation below the frost line. With a grain box loaded with rock, it drove about 3 inch ruts in my aunts lawn, and while dumping it, it pulled a wheelie while i felt the frame twisting.
These trucks really get the crap beaten out of them, because the gasoline engines dont have the low end torque to pick up from low rpm like diesels do, so you'll need to rev it high before you drop the clutch, which results in blue smoke from under the hood....
Mostly the gear ratios arent sufficient for serious offroading either.

Eddie, do you ever just around on the porch (or in the ac) with a glass of something for a day without doing anything? I'm impressed with what you tackle and get accomplished.
