Good eye, the leak is the cylinder the pivots the backhoe from left to right. I redid one of them two months ago and now it's time for the other side. Just needed to get the engine done first.

I did think about swaping in a 460, but think this will be cheaper and have plenty of power when it's done. Mostly it's just gonna run around on my land and never see pavement except to get gas, wich is half a mile away. Since it will hardly ever leave first gear, I think it should be fine. That is if the block and heads check out OK.

I agree. The trick is to realize when he's had enough and get him to take a break. He's one of those guys who likes to push it and not admit he's tired.

Thank you, Dad has always been an inspiration to me. He's accomplished allot in his life and started at the very bottom when he and my Mom imigrated here from Canada.

This morning we got on the engine and taking it apart. I was very curious as to what the problem was and if I needed to really rebuild the entire engine, or if it was just the top end.

Turns out pulling the engine was the right choice!!!

It would appear that at one time, something go into a few of the cylinders. Dad thinks it was the wrong spark plugs. Maybe too long. I don't have a clue.

These pictures are of the worse two pistons. They are total junk. The taper on the cylinders isn't too bad, but it's there.

I droped the block, heads, crank and pistons off at the same machine shop who did my dozer head. He will bore out the block to the next level and grind the crank down to the next level too. The bearings had plenty of wear on them too, so that will be taken care of. Basically everything will be new.

The clutch was slipping some, so that was another good reaso to take the engine out. The disk itself was worn and glazed, but not down to the rivits. It didn't have much life left in it, but a little.

The preasure plate looked ok too, but wa probably the source of my problem that I'm getting to.

The throw out bearing has allot of play and is just about shot.

The surface of the flywheel is where the real damage is. It's smooth, but full of small cracks. I've done a few clutches and engine rebuilds, but never saw this before. The owner of the machine shop looked it over and said I had plenty of material left and it would be easy for him to resurface it.

The picture shows the worse of the little cracks.

Something to consider, I have a machine shop that I have been using for about 25 years. He buys internal parts wholesale. I usually get what I need from him. That way I get the right parts with the right clearances because he deals with it everyday. He is competitive with the other suppliers too.
Has even saved me money. Mercruiser 4 cyl 181 cu in boat engine- dealer wanted $54. just for piston. He sold me 4 pistons with rings and pushed the pins too for $79.

It amazes me how bad the inside of an engine can look and still run fairly well. At least older engines.

I guess I didn't mention that. The machine shop will supply me with all the parts and gaskets. This way he knows what he's bored it over to and what pistons I need. He also gets them himself and eliminates allot of running around for me. He'll install the pistons onto the rods, put the bearings and freeze plugs into the block and get the right sized bearings for the crank after he grinds it down.

No guesswork on my part. He does it right and it's allot harder for me to mess it up.

Yes sir, I have family from one end to the other up there. I qualify for duel citizenship if I want it, and one of my brothers did just that a few years ago.

Those cracks are from heating the flywheel surface and are normal in HD equipment as well as in very high HP applications. You see that often when the operator rides the clutch, especially with a load. While the rig is down, you may want to check the clutch peddle pivot points for wear as well as the linkage. If it has hydraulic actuation, flush the system out and put in new fluid.

As far as the rebuild being cheaper....maybe. Around here you can still get BB ford engines for $200 (not often) to $500 fairly often. May be a pig in a poke, but you can pull the plugs and exhaust manifolds and tell about all you need to know.

Can you post what the total damages $ are when done? Just curious as to what they are charging down in the great state of Texas as compared to the white wastelands of Wisconsin (go Packers!).
