I do not have an 470 since it is an SUV and unless you have a hybrid that is the normal MPG for it, nothing new here.

Also yes the bills you posted look high but $1,100 for a pump? I had my timing belt, water pump and tentioners change for less then $500 out the door at my local ripoff Lexus dealer.

I need a truck but why bother when I can borrow my father ford “exploder” or my friends Powerchoke 6.0. Let him to the gallons of ATF etc.

Lastly that is why I stated in my original post unless you have a need for it, I would not buy diesel. You need to weight out all areas. So far I know the upkeep I had to do and it was more then my gas engine.

PS: poor decision???? Hmm, you have no idea on what I made when I traded it in for. I got 18K with 80K miles on it and paid 23 for my car. Had 5K in cash and walked out the door. Poor decision. I only paid 26 for it when new. How do you figure /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You're going to compare a diesel pickup to a gas car to make your point?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'm not sure what you guys in CT do to your diesels up there but where I'm from you rarely replace a relay or glow plugs. We have numerous trucks that have never them replaced much less a sensor. Those are not routine maintenance issues. Sounds like you had a bad one. That' too bad but for the most part there is little work to be done on one.

Well the other thing I have to think about...in the hurricanes this year gas was hard to find and dieasal was almost impossible

true, but I went through 3 GPR in 80K miles
1 Air temp sensor
1 BARO sensor
and the GP's were changed at 100K miles since the truck was hard to start the next winter as per the guy who bought it.

I am just saying is that if you do not need a diesel truck I would not buy it......not worth it.

I agree there is little work but I do less with my car and have less problems. Again you have some that love diesels and some "that is all they know". It cost much less for me now then when I had my PSD. Less oil, less fuel, less working on it, less everything.

I am comparing it since unless there is a need, do not buy one. There is no cut and dry answer, period.

Choose wisely...The fuel $$$ is going to eat up all your longevity etc. So it will equal out. In CT today 2.37 per gallon and reg gas is still 1.83

Mike, I was not baseing it on monetary values, purely need. Your right, I have no clue nor do I need to know that aspect. If you can use your families and that not be an issue, thats great, all the more reason I don't think you really needed a truck since I doubt your the type that would borrow their truck on a daily basis as many of us with trucks utilize ours. My sisters water pump issue was actually $600 except that they told her they would recommend replacing other various componets with the pump off that could easily be done then. That appeared to be true enough except that it did add $500 in parts and labor. It seemed to be the correct way to go. Here in CA, diesel is about the same as regular gas except that if I had a Ford 460 in my truck instead of the 7.3, I would be buying not quite twice as much of it. The 351 while a little better, would still have been less then the 17-18 mpg I get on my old anemic diesel. The only time that is an issue is going up to 5000' plus. At 9000' feet my diesel is performing about as bad as an engine could but todays diesels have really changed that. Admittedly it is pretty embarressing going up a grade in my nearly empty truck at 40 mph. I hope to change that someday. A gas truck though is out of the question unless its a compact like the Toyota or Nissan.

Let's see, on my Dodge with a Cummins, in 180k miles I've bought a half dozen fuel filters, two sets of front brake pads, one set rear shoes, one K&N air filter I clean myself, regular oil changes, and one transmission at 112k (my fault - I far exceeded the power that the stock trans could hold). Yup, that about covers it. That would equate into one trip to the shop in 9 years. Gees, based on that, a Lexus must suck. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Oh yeah, I also regularly abuse it and tow over 20,000 loads too. My history for my Cummins is about normal. I just don't think I'd have the same history with a gasser. Oh yeah, fuel economy, when not hauling heavy loads, averages about 13.7mpg overall. That is with a 7500 pound 4X4 truck.

So you only chg your fuel filter only every 30K miles? As I have stated in the past, I would take a Cummins over a PSD. You only get 13.7? Wow I would have thought better. My PSD was over 6K lbs and got over 18mpg, average. Even towing I never got below 15 or at over 85 mph.

My car was in the shop for an EGR and a MAP sensor due to mice.

Dargo,

Brian caught the meaning of my statement. That, at resale, the upfront $4K cost difference is recouped (within $1K-2K) at resale.

On re-reading my post, I guess my sentence structure was confusing. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Yeah, only 13.7, and sometimes the .7 is a .5 on fillups. It wasn't that bad until I got it to where it will smoke all 4 rear tires. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Believe it or not, that is all I have to change my fuel filter. I can't really tell any difference when I do. Unless I'm on a trip, I always get my fuel from the same place. I really think that helps.

And you know I was being facetious about a Lexus being repair prone. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif My mother who lives in IN and FL has about 230k on her "baby" 300 Lexus sans any problems to mention.

Gomez, I hadn't had my two cans of Mountain Dew yet at that time of the morning. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I guess I wasn't firing on all cylinders.
