are yuo saying that you are getting spark fromt he coil secondary over to one of the primary contacts on the coil?

Just when I pulled the plug wires from the cap and sparked them through the open connection. Then I noticed light sparking on the coil from the secondary connection to the long ignition wire that runs to the terminal block

it should only do that if there is no other more convienient path to ground.

check for cracks inthe coil top and or carbon tracking.

Yes, it looks like there might be some cracks around the BAT terminal. Will replace the coil. Could this cause the surges after running for an hour?

if the coil is overheating and cracking.. could be thermally breaking down.

if she is 12v.. get a napa ic14sb and use no resistors..

6volts. I like original---though I'm going to spend an extra $10 and get an oil-filled coil. Don't know if it really matters...

Thanks.

it does.. oil potted coils exhibit superior heat disipation characteristics.

Soundguy, posted this on that other board:

Bought a new coil and want to be sure I connect it properly. It's going on a 1957 6v 860-positive ground. The old coil is marked BAT and DIST; new is marked - and +. Which terminal goes where? + to dist, or to battery????

My guess is negitive goes to BAT and positive to dist... Just want to be sure.

match coil polarity to battery polarity.

if bat + is on chassis.. then + on coil goes to distribuitor, thus points.. thus ground.. which is what chassis is common to.

Soundguy, will this early 2000 PTO cover match up to my 57 860 PTO cover? The one on the tractor has a messed up (loose) lever and I want to sap these out if possible. Outside looks the same, but I haven't taken off the cover to check if the inside is the same and thought you might know. Don't know exact year of the 2000---just said it's "early".
