That was it! Dirty plunger-stuck in there. Cleaned it up and it moves easy and falls out on its own. I guess that's the reason they put a screen around the oil pick-up tube, and why you shouldn't remove it.

Thanks for your help soundguy.

Now I really messed it up. Book said to remove the distributor, so I marked the timing position and removed it, but I didn't mark the rotor position and then when trying to put it back I spun it, and can't remember where the rotor was. Does it only go in one way? I can't seem to get it to drop that last bit---like it's not in postion or it's hung up on the hex drive to the oil pump. Need to be sure about the rotor position---any marks or other tricks short of dismantalling the entire engine???

Book says I need to rotate crankshaft till #1 piston is at TDC. When I did this on my motorcycle I'd stick a screwdriver down the sparkplug hole and wait for the piston to come up. How can I be sure it's up AFTER the compression stoke? Doesn't the piston go up twice? Also, how to turn that engine---motorcycle was easy, only two small pistons...

Okay, sorry for the silly questions. Removed plugs and it spins from the front crank pully. Number 1 is front on engine. Need #1 TDC after compression stroke---how to differentiate between "after compression" and "after exhaust" stoke?

look at valves.. IE. pull valve cover... that and the old thumb on the spark plug hole will get you darn close.

as for the dizzy position.. as you could.. it goes in alotta ways.. probably 17 or so.. and any of them can work.. as long as you line up the rotor to the one fireing :)

fire order is 1-2-4-3 as you know, 1 is at the front... by the rad

I like the thumb on the spark-plug hole method. Just so I'm sure I have it right, is the compression stroke the one where you can feel the air coming from the hole---and you don't feel that pressure on the exhaust stroke---right?

exhaust stroke, exhaust valve should be open...

roll it over a few times .. watch the valve train... fire order is 1.2.4.3

it won't take you but 1 rev to fivure it out.

ps.. I'd be feeding it oil before spinning it too much.. lest that thinner 20w50 start thinning on the gears tot he point she won't pull suction.

I've used stp before.. etc.. or vasolene...

Okay. I'll wait til there's oil in it. Thanks for putting up with my lack of expertise. Your help is very appreciated.
