Here's the last one for now. This is a close-up of the brick retaining wall after the backfill was done. I think it looks nice. Kind of wished I had planned ahead for a light fixture on the end. Oh, well, one less bulb to change.

Rox,

I'll be happy to post pictures of the kitchen. As of last week, the cabinet man said he was about 6 weeks from completing them. We still have to pick out the counter tops. Had planned all along on going with the synthetic quartz-based material (I believe Silestone is one brand name of this stuff) due to ease of maintenance. But, a friend of mine is in the granite business and she told me recently that, with proper selection, you can get granite that requires only minimal maintenance and will look great and hold up well. So, my wife needs to do some shopping soon.

It is not a large kitchen, but I hope it will serve our needs. Stay tuned, and we should have some pictures of the kitchen in a couple of months.

sliestone is GREAT stuff. If your granite person can get you a great deal on the real stuff then wonderful. If not....the move on!!!

Your home looks amazing. I really love the pics from before the cleanup and then after. Night and day!!!

Do you have a landscaping plan? Getting it on paper and knowing beforehand what plants you want and where you want them will save you a ton of money, not to mention doing it right the first time.

What was the decision on the lights?

Eddie,

As always, thanks for the kind words. The landscape plan has not been finalized. I am more concerned with getting the hardscape plan and bed locations identified now than the exact planting scheme. As I've mentioned on too many occassions, the budget on this house has been strained. I can install plant material at any time after we move in. I can't pour concrete. So, you are right in saying that I need a plan (including plants), but the implentation of that plan will be gradual. At move in time, I want all patios, walkways, parking and driveway done, planting beds identified, irrigation system and sod installed. I'll need to have a minimum number of foundation shrubs for the bank to sign off on it, but I'll plant the rest of the stuff later.

Ahhh, the light issue. I haven't forgotten. On the attached picture of the garage end, where you see the green dot, we will install an exterior fixture. Where you see the red dots, I have junction boxes behind the Hardiplank wired and ready in case I find a good looking fixtures that will add to the esthetics. For general lighting / security I have flood lights on the eaves (or are they soffits?) on the corners where you see the blue dots. So, the man door is lit well from the outside, the garage will be lit by the interior lights when the door is opened and we have security lights with the floods. And we wired to add cosmetic touches if we want. Thanks for asking.

RedRocker,

Thank you. I wish I could take the credit. I'm just blessed with a good builder.

Cowboyjg,

Thanks for the endorsement of the Silestone. Never used it but heard that it was a good alternative to granite. I hear it is more stain resistant and requires no maintenance. And, my wife likes it. I appreciate your comments.

Bmac,

What did you ever do with that upstairs window area, where there was no roof? I saw you had a picture showing how the designer forgot to give this one area a roof of any sort. I've been looking for the "fix" in some of your latest pictures but it's hard to see from the ground angles.

Beautiful house I might add!

THS,

The "roofless area" was over the breakfast room (outlined in yellow in the attached photo). I didn't exactly see the framer make the correction and can't remember specifically what they did, other than taking the roof ledger all the way to the window sill on the second floor. I do remember them telling me they had to do some cutting and re-framing in order to get things to fit. As you can see in the photo, this roof is continuous with that covering the screened porch to the right.

My kids love it that they can step right out of their bedroom window on to the roof. My wife does not see this as a positive design feature. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thank you for reminding me of one of the many obstacles we had to negotiate during the framing process. Things have gone so smoothly since the framing was completed that I almost forgot that I was still angry with the architect. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh, and thanks for the kind words.

Time to check in again. It took about two and a half weeks to get the dry wall hung, taped and finished. Other than that, the only thing we've done is to get the brush pile burned and then started on the exterior painting.

Although my digital camera does not have a sufficient wide angle lens to get good interior shots, I thought I would attempt a tour through the place with the dry wall up. We'll see how it goes. But, first, here's a couple of exterior pics of the painting that's been done so far - front of the upper level and, in the next picture, the garage end.

The garage end. The reason these two areas were done first is so we can get the metal roof on soon and minimize getting it walked on by the other subs.

Standing in the garage looking into the mud room. Once inside, to the right is a small office and to the left takes you into the breakfast room / kitchen.

Here's part of the kitchen. On the left hand wall will be the range and some cabinets. Also on this wall next to the door from the mudroom is where the fridge will be placed. The door you see leads to the small butler's pantry (which then leads to the dining room).

To the right of the door will be cabinets and on the right hand wall will be a few cabinets, the sink and dishwasher. There will be a narrow island in the center of the kitchen. As I've mentioned before, this is not a very large kitchen. It's gonna be packed pretty tight. We will gain about 6 ft of counter space, base and overhead cabinets in the butler's pantry. Also, once you enter the butler's pantry from the kitchen, to the right (and behind the short wall in this pic), there is a narrow walk-in food pantry.

Family room. Over the fireplace, I had the framers carve out a recessed area for a flat screen tv. To the right and left of the fireplace will be built-in shelving.

The master bedroom is so small, it didn't photograph well. We'll see if the master bath makes sense in the pictures. This one is the bath as viewed from my wife's closet. My closet is stright ahead (with the window). The first door on the left is the water closet (what I call the tiolet room) and the second door on the left is the shower. On the right hand side, opposite the shower and toilet (and not seen in this picture) is the vanity.
