Tractor
john deere 2320
I was washing the tractor down with the garden hose when I realized what looks like a rubber coating on the cooling line in front of the radiator and also just below where the battery sits has came off and is rusting. Tractor has less than twenty hours on it. Seemed like something I should bring up to the dealer to replace. I know heat would probably be the cause but I just hate to see rusty parts on my new tractor so soon. Any opinions on this? Thanks ahead of time!

Yeah I haven't figured out how to erase it.

It could be the battery leaking-not an uncommon problem with the JD batteries unfortunately. I would notify your dealer ASAP.

Yeah I haven't figured out how to erase it.

Lower RH corner you should see an "EDIT" button.
Click on it...one of the options is to delete the post (which I'm going to do with mine as soon as I post this).

Duplicate threads aren't a biggie, but they can result in confusion in responses. You might miss a very pertinent response...

I got to thinking about it and I'm not proud to say it was my fault that the battery is leaking because of having put water on it while rinsing the tractor off.

Has anyone else made this mistake or am I just that ignorant? I didn't want to make it sound like JD was at fault.

Did you overfill the battery?
Actually, for as new as your tractor is...you shouldn't have had any need to top off the battery.

Just to clarify please, You think that rinsing the battery off filled it up? Or you actually removed the caps and put water in it?

If it's the first question, the caps should seal well enough to prevent any water from getting into the battery.

No, I think water got on the battery enough to cause a circuit between positive and negative causing the battery to possibly overheat or whatever a battery would do in that case and leak out or "explode"

No, that's not gonna happen.

AGREED! and even IF it did, there is a tube attached to the battery that routes any overflow overboard and away from the area.

Well I got my baby back today. Pullin her home now. Not reeeeeal impressed with the repair but we'll see how it holds up. They replaced the battery and painted the damaged cooling line and plate that the battery sits on. I was thinking they should've replaced those parts to new again. The paint looks kinda half a**.

AmericanJD is your 2320 new? I am waiting for a new 2520. Reading old posts I thought that the battery leaking issues had been resolved?

I hate battery corrosion on any vehicle and dread the thought of a new JD tractor possibly having that issue.

I was hoping by now for a sealed battery and no leaks.
Tried to remember to check so many things when buying a new tractor it never occured to me to check the battery.

P.S. I am E-mailing the dealer ato ask.

Yes, I bought it from the dealer a little over a month ago maybe two now.

I would not accept that repair on a new machine. Demand to speak with a regional rep. It should be fixed "as new" under warranty-spray paint is not as-new.

Thank you kenny. A second opinion really puts it in perspective. In the back of my head I'm thinking it is just a tractor but at the same time it is BRAND NEW. And I've never bought anything new before. I could've done a better repair than they did. They put something in front of the radiator and sprayed the cooling line which didn't even get it all on the back side. Anyways, I appreciate it!

yup..i agree. needs to be replaced. not repainted. Also, feel free to wash the battery all you want. it WILL NOT short a battery. i wash mine all the time. Actually that helps keep corrosion down, and keeps everything looking great.

If metal is corroded by battery acid, paint will just cover it up, its still rusting underneath. Man, the dang batteries are a real pain in the a%%. I had to replace both battery hold down brackets, bottom plates and screws on the 94 dodge.....$180.00 later, they look brand new. Probibly more than the trucks worth hehe.

Ok, they said the reason they did not replace the parts is that if they pressure tested the line and results were good then warranty declined the idea of replacing the parts. I told them that doesn't satisfy me and about the rust under the paint. They called me at 8:15 this morning and are ordering all new parts. Supposedly warranty dept. Will not cover new parts so the dealer is taking the hit. I don't believe that but hey, I'm getting what I want! Thanks guys for inspiring me to call.
