Finally bought a new house with an 1.6 acres. Got lots of new toys and one of them is broken. I picked up this little gem for $600 with the dr trimmer/mower:

Its an 1988 or so model Kubota 5200. 14hp diesel with a 48" cut deck, 1200 hours on the clock. Was immaculately maintained and runs like a champ.

The problem I am having is with the dr trimmer. Its has a b & s 5.5hp motor. Its really hard to get started. Once it starts it runs for about 5 minutes and dies and doesnt want to start back up. The filter is clean, oil level is ok, and has fresh gas in it. The only thing i havent checked yet is the plug. Any other ideas on what could cause this?

I've seen B&S carbs that set for a while get a stuck flaot needle.. it restricts fuel flow into the bowl.. make sit hard to start.. then once started.. the bowl eventualls runs dry cause fuel can't enter as fast as it is being used. Drop the bowl and check the needle..

Or if it has an inline filter in the gas line, might be mostly plugged.

Someone will point it out sooner or later. Don't forget to fill out your profile.

Forgot to answer the post. :( I would go for a good carb cleaning and check to see if the inline fuel filter is plugged.

If it hasn't been run in a while, My vote is for stuck float needle. Take bowl off check for gunk (if there was gas left in it) and check float needle. Just my guess although fuel filter sounds reasonable also.

Welcome to Tractorbynet. That Kubota looks like a great bargain. As for the DR trimmer/mower, as the others said, I'd put a new spark plug in it, and if you're experienced at overhauling carburetors, go for it. If you were paying someone to do it, for about the same money, and less time, you can just replace the carburetor; a quick, simple job.

The fuel tank on my ancient piece of junk Snapper riding lawnmower has a cap with a vent valve on top. If this vent valved is screwed down tight, then fuel won't flow and the thing shuts down after running a few minutes.

Got a chipper/shredder with B&S 5.5HP that did the same thing. In all likelyhood, it's the carb/fuel delivery causing the problem, but should that NOT solve the problem, check ign modual. Mine was "bad". When it started to get a dose of heat from the running motor, it would shut down until completely cooled. New ign. made it start up better initially as well as when it got hot. Very simple to check. Next time it dies, see if you have spark before going any further.

But, in all likelyhood, it's a fuel issue.

I've got a second 5.5HP Briggs on a push mower. It sat for 2 years without so much as pulling the rope. Last week I poured in fresh gas, pushed the primer bulb a few times and it lit on the very first pull.
