It's a pain to get the permit, it been a while so I don't remember exact costs, but these are in the neighborhood. I had to do fingerprints @ $125+, permit fee of $30, NRA safety course, $30, wait for judge to have an opening, $10 to print permit, wait for permits to come in mail. Oh did I mention they wanted you buy a pistol after you get approved, but before they print the license? But here's the best part, you can't even hold a pistol at a store until you have a permit!! So how do you know if it even fits your hand etc??? So dumb. Once you get the permit, carrying is easy, just keep it concealed unless pistol hunting, then it can/should be exposed while on hunting grounds, concealed when leaving. Now to buy one, you go pay for it at a store, get a voucher, leave without it, get it added to your permit, wait for the new permit in the mail, then go pick up your pistol.

OUCH!! I wanted a smaller pistol I could carry, went into the gun shop and 30-40 minutes later left with the new gun!!

We are about 2-3 weeks. But like I said, hopefully this keeps some guns out of the hands of some people who shouldn't have them. If I have to wait 2 weeks for a new pistol so a wife abuser doesn't get one, I'll wait.

CT is similar to NY. Had to take NRA class $50. Then bring NRA certificate to town hall and apply for town permit $50. Go to State Police barracks 45 min away and get fingerprinted and submit background check. Town receives results of background check 1-2 weeks later. Town calls you to come get your town permit, has to be signed by first selectman. Can't buy a gun yet, you need to exchange your town permit for a state license. Take town permit to State Police headquarters an hour away, pay $125 to get photographed and walk out with your license. License is good for 5 years. Renewals are $125. Stop by gun store on the way home and buy gun. Glad owning a gun is guaranteed by the constitution. They would make it hard if it were not in the bill of rights! I wonder what would happen if they made a similar process for registering to vote, also a constitutional right!

When I retire and leave CT and move out west, I have a list of guns I am going to buy. All the ones we cannot have in CT - AR15's, AR10's, AR Style shotguns etc.

We can buy AR-15's, but most that are for sale are only .223, to me that's a waste of a nice firearm. Here we can also buy the Saiga shotgun, I am assuming that's what you meant by AR style shotgun.

Thanks for the heads up, another state I'll never move to.. I think my carry permit was $50, and $5 for fingerprinting, send in the application with the $50 and they mail you your permit. Don't need a permit to just buy the gun, just the $$$$ and some form of ID, drivers license or what ever, go to the store fill out the background check, wait that hideous 15 minutes or so for it to come back, and go home with your new prize!

And what would you rather have than the 223? And why waste your money on an AR anyway? Pony up and buy a real battle weapon like a FNH SCAR!! I wouldn't want a AR style shotgun.. my shoulder could not take that beating! I'm very judicious when I pull the trigger on a 12 ga any more, I suppose one in 410 or 20 ga might be ok.

If at all possible I would consider leaving some open space above the main shooting bench etc...just so the noise is not so bad...even with "ears" on it can still be bothersome the more enclosed it is...

So I've been thinking on this and I think that is good advice, I hadn't thought of that aspect. I was going to use a low , low pitch gable style roof on this for blocking out the sun in the afternoon/evening. My range faces almost due west due to the layout of my land and where I could build this. But now I'm thinking if I still use the low-low pitched roof to guard against the sun, but use a shed roof that is open to the east or backside, it will allow for that noise to escape out the back.

I never thought of the roof adding anything to the sound of a rifle or pistol when fired because the end of the barrel is at the outside edge of the roof, and it's going away from the roof.

Well I'm hoping the roof extends about 3 feet or so past the end of the barrel so you will get some reverberation off the ceiling/roof.. not a lot but some.
