I gotta tell ya ... I've been going over dozens of thread here, particularly about pricing for kabota compacts.

I live in the hudson valley and am looking for a R E A S O N A B L E deal on a new or used 2710/2910 with FEL. (I realize that these tractors have short shelf lives on the used market) By "reasonable" I mean as good as the next guy's deal. If you can't match an actual sale price from another dealer, then, as a dealer, you're assuming that you'll make your bottom line by selling to basically uninformed clients. Getting the most for a particular machine apparently often means ignoring in total what your competition is willing to sell for and to whom.

I just got 3 quotes from the nearest Kubota dealers on B2910's with FEL & R4s:

1st: 16,500+ base and 3,400 for the loader.
2nd: 16,500+ base and 3,400 for the loader -7% markdown
3rd: 18,500+ (no quote on the loader, too shocked)

ALL THREE QUOTES ARE BEFORE 7.25% Sales tax and Delivery!!!!!!

STEP BACK FROM THE CRACK PIPE!

If folks here are true to their posts, working hard to find a 15% off list price should be attainable, but apparently not in my state.

Dealers MUST make a profit. Really? I have no problem with that. But to insist that the size of that profit be proportionate to my assumed stupidity, well, I find insulting ... makes it difficult to become a repeat customer.

I'm like most I suspect, if someone makes me a good deal, I take PLEASURE in the transaction and take PLEASURE in passing my experience along to others who might also be potential PLEASURE seekers at new tractor time, and take PLEASURE in offering my undying loyalty as a repeat customer.

The aforementioned business models bite... and I will do all I can to make anyone else I might know in the tractor market as informed as possible.

I'm sure, from a sales point, there are disparities in regional sales. Well, the region I live in, to date, will hopefully start seeing their clients going out of state or region to make these large purchases. In business, they must either compete or go under, giving the next retailer an attempt a chance at being competitive.

There, I said it. I've got some cash for a tractor. Who wants it? Who deserves it?

Sounds like you're a candidate to call up the world-famous Steve Carver at Carver Equipment Co.

Clearly, my local dealers are unwilling to move much or at all from list. That being the case, they will lose my business. And any future business I or someone I might know will pass them by also.

Brilliant. Great model. Pleasure not doing biz wit cha.

Kind of a general response...

I'm in CNY - Syracuse area. When I started looking (December 2000), I was quite unknowledgable about what I was doing. I don't think that I found this web site until after I had taken possession of the tractor (B7500).

Part of the problem from a consumer pricing standpoint is that you don't really know what the dealer's true cost is, unlike car shopping where the dealer's invoice figures are free to all on the internet. For me, that made it a little hard to negotiate, since I only had their word to go by.

I'm not mechanically inclined, so that limited my options as to where to purchase, because I did want dealer support. In addition, I had no clue what I was doing, what I needed, etc., so I needed a dealer to point me in the right direction.

I bought locally, but the dealer went out of business about two months later,. Closest dealer is about 30 miles away now. Therefore, I ended up on "my own" anyway.

But...I found out that I can do all of the basic maintenance work with no problem. Supplies are easy to come by as you can purchase just about anything over the Internet.

My point - get quotes from someone like Carvers; don't limit yourself to local dealers. In addition, Carvers seems to have alot of used units that may give you what you want. I probably would have done just that - bought at the lowest price no matter where in the USA - had I known that the dealer I used was going to go under.

Since I've had the tractor, I've kept an eye out for used ones just because I'm interested in what they're asking. I haven't seen many ads at all. Even in the construction magazines and newspapers that I see, which a stocked with equipment auctions, I don't see much of these being sold.

One potential for a source of used ones is to look for house sale ads that have acreage; it's possible that the sellers have equipment that will be sold with the house, but they may sell it separately if you ask. You never know.

Well yes, those quotes are all out of the park compared to what others are paying in other parts of the country ... fortunately, you can take advantage of the more competitive pricing dealers offer in those different regions. Carver Equipment has many many satisfied customers from out of state and they know all the ins/outs of selling you a tractor and shipping it to you...

Other alternatives are dealers in rural areas within 100-150 miles... most will quote over the phone. But you probably wouldn't use them for service, so the advantage to buying from them over Carver really isn't there, unless 1) there's an even bigger price difference (not likely) or 2) you're going to shop simply based on price.

Dap,
I'm outside of Rochester, NY and have the same type of dealers here. got quoted $3k higher than Carver, and that was before the sales tax! I was about to go the Carver route when my neighbor let me "steal" his B2710 with 126 hrs. when he had to move out of state. I went to the one local dealer here for a price on a Curtis Cab for my tractor. He was $200 over list plus shipping and tax! One thing thats nice about the high priced dealers is that it makes your used tractor worth a lot more. I sold my B8200 HST with FEL and 6ft. rear finish mower for $12k. Guy went to the dealers and got sticker shock, he figured he got a great deal on my used one! I would just look for used if you have the time to wait for the "good deal" if not give Steve Carver a call, you won't be sorry.

I would agree with Muhammad that you should look elsewhere, even if it is out of state. It is unfortunate that no local dealer will negotiate with you. I purchased my tractor from a dealer 43 miles from my house, however they will come out and pick the tractor up and deliver it at no charge if I need work done on it. The sales rep has been to my house 3 times to talk to me about my tractor. This is a dealership that truly values its customers.

DAP, Check out Sharon Springs Garage, Sharon Springs is an hour west of Albany. They did right by me 2 years ago and several friends have also bought Kubota's from Dave Handy. 1-800-887-1872. He beat Carver's price on my L3710, and I didn't have to pay shipping or wait to have is shipped 1000 miles.

Just curious, did it also make up for not having to pay sales tax at Carver's? On my B7500 the sales tax was close to $900 and the shipping was only $250. Of course I am a bit closer than either of you. 4 hours I think. I had struck a deal with my local dealer only to have it messed up by him not having the tires I wanted. I just sat there looking at him figuring he being the salesman would offer alternatives or what it would cost me to have what I wanted. When nothing was forthcoming I asked if by chance they had something coming in with the tires I wanted so we could swap 'em. He said that was a good idea and that he would call me when he found out. I think it's been two months now and I haven't heard a word...../w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif I don't need to buy local and I certainly don't want to have the dealer feel that he did me a favor selling me this tractor. Oh well, seems to be more common than uncommon....unfortunately.
