No Politics But Vote

Vin,
A lot of them think that food is made at a factory and lots of them have no idea what it takes to feed them, if they did we wouldn't have the radical groups with as much pull as they do. But as a farmer, I have to deal with the type that I am referring to all to often. I will stop at saying what I have, I don't want to get something started on TBN that has to be stopped.

Im of the opinion that only tax payers, & property owners should be allowed to vote

Well I guess that makes two of us then. I'd even propose a more radical idea. You get one vote for every 25k in taxes that you pay. 0-25k =1 vote, 25k to50k =2 votes etc. That would be at the federal level. At the local level you get one vote for every $2500 in property taxes. If you don’t pay any property taxes you get one vote. It’ll never happen I know, but if I were king that’s the way I would set it up....or wait a minute I’m King, I’m the only one that votes. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well if nothing else this would be a good incentive to stop tax evasion,

Everyone pays taxes everytime they purchase something, except in some states /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
People that live in apartmentsand rentals could be affected by taxes. As tax rates go up so does the rent. The owners have to cover their costs too.
What about school levies? I have a potential of my taxes raising $40 a month ($480 a year) and my kids are grown. The local school district has built 8 new elaborate schools in the last 2 years and now they need money to operate them. I want to vote for it for the kids, but $40 a month??

Voting is one area in this country where it has been kept simple...one person, one vote...no strings attached (well, almost no strings...)

Why not just keep it this way... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Whoops... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

<font color="blue"> "I'm in Lake County, Indiana and historically votes could be purchased here for about $2 each. . . "</font>

Bob, I'm shocked... SHOCKED, I say, to hear that anything untoward would go on in Lake County.

Why... a few years ago when a former county sheriff up that way was found dead in his home from 28 blows to the head with claw hammer, I'm sure that ruling of 'death by suicide' was just an oversight.

<font color="blue">"The college student on the other hand is a different story. Their little mushy minds are only being filled with the professors thoughts and Brittany Spears outfits. Most college kids I know couldn't even tell you the name of the Foreign Affairs Advisor. Which I find very sad. College is an institution of learning and not a platform upon which to protest your professors one issue that they vote on. Vote on the big picture!!!" </font>

This sounds a bit like sour grapes to me, driven more perhaps by who the poster thinks college students are voting for. If they're old enough to fight & die, then I think they're old enough to vote, and ought to. When I was in college, I most certainly knew who, why, and what I was voting for. And it did not come from the professors at my school! While democracy cannot be viable with an ignorant and uninvolved public, who shall decide if YOU are qualified to vote? Chances are, if they care enough to go vote, then they probably do know at least a little. We are hardly suffering from too much participation!

<font color="blue"> 'Over half the voting population in Vermont lives in the Burlington area. Most are People From Away (a politically correct reference to #*%&! Flatlanders) who know little about rural Vermont and could care less. They vote for what helps their city, often at the expense of their rural neighbors. Farms are failing all over the state, and no assistance is coming from the city dwellers." </font>

Pete,

That is the very same argument I've heard going on in Illinois for decades. There it's Chicago vs. 'Downstaters' but the scenarios is quite the same. People vote their pocketbooks in the vast majority of situations. These are but a couple examples.

<font color="blue"> I am voting for AndyM...... my squishy mind tells me that he is the last honest politician to seek office. </font>

I can't even get on village council, let alone elected president! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

However you look at it, there's 300 million people in this country, and those are the BEST two people we can find to run for the highest office in the land??? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

<font color="blue"> That is head in the sand stuff, surely a doctor in New York, a lawyer in Boston and a car industry worker in Detroit can understand economics and productivity as well as someone from the country, if not better, because those country folk with exceptional talent tend to move to high paid city jobs. </font>

If all the country folks with talent move to the big cities, who is going to grow our vegetables and milk our cows?

Where does it say the rich folks in the big cities are smarter than us folks out in the country?
Maybe we were the smart ones, by moving away from those city folks! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Some of the structure of our government is so interesting, like the Electoral College. Even though it has some flaws, it is still the most fair and balanced system to represent all areas of the country.

Boy, I leave for a couple hours, and there's 22 new posts to this thread! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
