So, what's the word on drum mowers for cutting berms or pond/stream banks?

"I'm looking for an economical way to mow with some sort of a cutting device set of to the side of the tractor."

Based on your initial statement and the size of your tractor, IMO you are pretty much limited to a sickle mower. I would not be so quick to discount the potential of one of these mowers. Sure there's a bit more maintenance, but they are pretty easy to maintain. I have a 7' on my 35HP AC D14 tractor and it works great for my 1/2 mile of road ditches and meadows. The only time I have problems is when I try to cut when its too wet. Easily cuts through elm saplings up to an inch.

I have a like new NH 451 that I paid $1200.

I talked to another farmer last might about the drum mowers. He was one of the first farmers around my area that started using drum mowers in the 1970's. He said they did a great job but the width was on the small side. Also the ones he had did not have conditioners for they hay. He still has one that he uses to clean up his fields borders. He did give me a name of the guy that was a dealer for the drum style mower. He may have a lead on some used ones.

I did ask him if they would work for what I want. He said they would if I got the one with a hydraulic lfit.

From Time to time we have good used drum mowers traded in. Usually when a customer trades for a larger tractor and then purchases a larger mower.

See the VMC-ORSI hydraulic off-set mower model 160. This mower will fit on the three point of most compact tractors of 30+ hp. will require dual SCV's or many use the loader SCV's. www.vmc-mow.com

I've sent VMC an email asking for prices.

One thing to note...the Owner's Manual recommends the tractor be equipped with a cab as well as screening on the cab. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Some day I plan on getting a rough cut mower from http://www.kunzeng.com/ and towing it offset behing my PT425. My current 4' brush hog combined with their 57" mower will give me over 8 feet of cut. About 57" of that will be off to one side or the other. Not sure if it is big enough for your needs, but they look pretty nice for my needs.

Yep. They said either model would work fine on my TC25D. Also, the prices were fob.
