I just don't see how they are a torsional spring. The assembly does not rotate (maybe it's locked up but I really hammered it and it doesn't move) I could see how it may be a depth control of some sort and I can see what appears to be some calibration markings on the surface of the round portion. But I don't see why the rubber "tire" on the outside of the round piece. What does it engage? Even if the assembly rotates, it seems the rubber never touches anything. I don't see how it could allow the coulter to move up and down if it encounters a rock. Anyone have coulters from Allis Chalmers like this??

Never saw those before, but yes - torsional spring.

Look at the seat of an Oliver tractor of the mid 1950s, or some Ford tractors from about the same period.... Same deal. The rubber is bonded to the metal on one side, and the metal on the other side, and the 2 pieces can flex a bit as they are not otherwise connected. Works good, until the rubber gets old and seperates from the metal....

It can be difficult to use odd-numbered rows with a planter, they don't often match up well for planting, or cultivating, when you use an odd number of rows. Depends on your row spacing. Most lanters that are on 20 inch or wider spacing are even rowed, only very narrow planters of 15 inches are odd numbered row units.

3pt is handier, tho it doesn't plant as smoothly as a drawn planter. Since the planter rows are individually powered it should be easy to convert.

I still don't see how it is a torsion spring, but I guess the only reason it matters is whether I need to free this up (assuming it is designed to rotate a few degrees) before I blast and paint it. Or do I just accept the fact they are locked up and it maybe it really doesn't matter. If the rubber is shot (which it is) then if it was a spring, it is non functional now. Would you bother to try to break this apart or just paint it as is?

For what you will be using the planter for, I would just weld the torsion joint solid or at the very least bolt it so it doesn't pivot anymore. You would still have vertical adjustment for depth and they should still swivel.

More than likely the rubber is all dried out and thus hard. This will prevent them from moving now.

On a 1 or 2 row planter, it wouldn't need to have a flexible mount on the coulters, as the toolbar weight isn't as high. On a 4-row and larger, the toolbar weight will be significantly higher. In this case you would want some flex to the coulter to prevent the coulter that is making contact with the rock, from having to bear the bulk of the toolbar weight as it is riding over the rock.

I don't plant any faster than 3-5 mph with my planter. Can't imagine that AC planter planting any faster either. Most plate type planters don't place seed well at speeds above 7 mph.

That makes sense. I guess the rubber was thicker at one time and acted like a bumper. I don't have to weld it as it is really rusted and locked up. I don't thing I could get it apart if I tried. Of course, the coulter will rotate horizontally. Thanks for your interest. I will post some more pictures soon. I see this being a long term project over the winter.

I think I can replace the drive chain and numerous springs from Tractor Supply. They look pretty generic.

I plan to completely disassemble this and sandblast all parts and repaint. I will leave one of the four assembled to help in reassembly. One of the seed boxes is totally trashed, so I will only restore three. I can use the old frame and just weld a three point attachment to it. I have lots of work to do!

As stated the rubber disc is to dampen the coulter if it engages rock or other hard objects. I have two AC row planters. One is no till with coulters. The rubber on one coulter was split in half. I bolted it together and if works fine.

I would love to see some pictures of yours, especially the coulters and seed plates. Are Allis seed plates available anymore or has anyone used the Deere adapter successfully?

Yes, seed plates are available through Lincoln Ag. You will need to buy john deere plates with an allis chalmers adaptor. You can get plates for beans, various size corn seeds, sunflowers, milo, sorghum and about anything else. If you plant soybeans, make the plot as large as possible or fence it off until the beans mature to at least four leaves. The deer will destroy a small plot with overgrazing as soon as they find it. I'll try to get some pics this weekend.

Here's a couple of links to ebay that might interest you. ALLIS CHALMERS SEED HOPPERS | eBay and ALLIS CHALMERS BEAN PLATES | eBay

Those A/C bean plates will clean up great, and probably never wear out. There's not a lot of plates for sale on ebay right now, but when it gets a little closer to planting time there's usually a bunch. Used will work fine, cheaper than the new ones, too. I wish you'd hurry up with this rebuild, I'm getting anxious to see some fresh paint! Mark

Thanks! I may bid on those. The only reason I was going to make a 3 vs. a 4 row was that one of the hoppers was rusted out and I decided not to have to make another one. As soon as hunting season is over I am going to get moving on these. I brought the planting units back to my workshop so I am going to start taking them apart for sandblasting. I am going to try electrolytic rust removal on the hoppers.

I also am going to restore an old Athens disc in similar condition (and we just bought a used Truax planter that will arrive in Feb.) so I have lots to do and little time to do it.
