duno about the years for what your talking about with ford and dodge but gm had 4 wheel disc in 99 and multiport truck engines in 99. the biggest failures i see from true 3/4 and 1 ton work trucks are 90% lack of maintenace. I have not seen many front end problems from them but a few u-joints now and again. we wont talk about fuel pumps, lol those are a day to day thing.
Yep, my 2000 Chevy has 4 wheel disc brakes.

That has not been my experience. I am extremely disciplined about scheduled and preventative maintenance, and I invariably perform and maintain at a level that most folks would consider as overkill.

New 81 Chevy K-15; 2 new A/C compressors, 2 complete valve/head overhauls due to bend valve rods. All in less than 57,000 miles

New 88 Ford T-Bird: new transmission x 2; new rotors x2 (cracking), 3 A/C compressors, long block replacement due to main bearing issues. 67,000 miles

New 90 Ford Aerostar: 1 A/C compressor and 2 new transmissions. All in less than 30,000 miles.

New 96 Ford F250: 2 A/C compressors; Complete ring job. All in less than 36,000 miles

New 2001 F350 7.5L Turbodiesel: 2 complete transmissions; the first at 1500 miles, the second at 25,000.

New 2003 F350 6L Turbodiesel: 2 New transmissions; the first at 500 miles, the second at 1500 miles; also complete replacement of the fuel supply lines. (leaking)

All of these vehicle were garaged and not abused in any fashion. That has been my experience, and why I am now looking elswhere.

I'm sorry that is way too much for a undersized tow vehicle. ;)

According to the Popular Mechanics testing in half tons, the Nissan Titan was rated number one over the rest of the 07s. You can read the articles online, just do a yahoo search..

Workin,
Sorry the 3/4 get the new 6.0VVT no AFM. The only GM's at this time with the 6.2 is the Cad. Escalade, and GMC Denali's. The HD's, 3/4 Suburban and Yukon XL get the LY6 with VVT. The 1/2 tons with 6.0 is the L76 with VVT and AFM accoring to media.gm.com

I just do not think one gets his/her money's worth with a 1/2 ton truck unless one goes with a "stripper" model. When these trucks are fully spec'd they come quite close to the cost of a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck with much less capability. I personally like the Toyota. It looks good, seems well-made and has a powerful (for a gas) engine. If I were buying a new truck today though, I would go 3/4 ton again. Z michigan wrote earlier that his Cummins would go 0-60 in 11 seconds. I would say his truck is probably much faster than that and probably gets great mileage, especially when towing. With Ford, GM and Dodge all making top-flight 3/4 ton and larger pickups with heavier suspensions and larger brakes and frame rails than any 1/2 ton, there is no reason in my mind to spend so much for less. My father argues this point with me by saying, "Not everyone NEEDS a 3/4 ton truck" but I respond by saying, "When does someone need to spend as much or more for less?" Just my thoughts.

With your history with vehicles I think I would just hire a car service from now on. I have never heard of one person have this much trouble with this many vehicles. I know a lot of guys with Fords, Chevy's and Dodges and I can only recall two of them having any trouble with the A/C units and they were on mid 90's units with 60k+ miles(one was a Dodge Caravan the other a F-150). The only transmission problems were with a couple of the Dodge rams gassers (a 96 and a 99).

Either you just have terrible luck, an upset neighbor or maybe you built your house on a old gremlin burial ground but I feel bad for you and your history with vehicles. Good luck with what ever model you decide to buy.

The half tons serve a purpose. They have a softer ride then the 3/4 and 1 tons. Allow people to haul things occasionally and trailer things. Tend to be smaller then their larger brothers to fit in garages and parking lots easier and usually have better mileage.

I do think Ford, Dodge and GM have all got carried away with their pricing but if people pay it then so be it. Our old 1992 F-150 custom 2wd with 8' bed cost around $12k with the straight six and stick. It was a great truck. Now for a base truck you are pushing $19-$20k easy.

like i said when i need it i will go buy a 2 year old 1 ton w/ a 8.1 gas and a dump bed. see those all the time down here for 18-24k. im pushing my half ton but its all i have right now. i really want my old 99 back it was a beast and served me great for years. one thing i will point out i dont think the rear suspension of the toy or my gm would hold up very long with 10,500 on it. they are pretty weak looking springs.

its all just propaganda from the truck companies. the new durimax is still d-tuned so when ford and dodge bump their numbers up gm just puts in a new program and poof more power. we have done it for years for different reasons.
ohh and by the way the new 3/4 ton gm is a 6.2 gas engine with even more power.

Yeah, not sure of the years but then, last time I even entertained the idea of a new full size truck was back in 96 or 97. I'm pretty sure both Dodge and Ford had multiport years before GM in the truck engines. I think Ford was first with 4 wheel disc brakes on the trucks. I think GM was last with the extended cab with the little suicide doors that opened on both sides. Just always seemed to me when looking at them that GM was always in catch up mode. What I see now and hear from you is good to hear.

As a side note; I would prefer to buy American made, but I will not do it because of guilt. I will do it if it is a better value all around or at least comparable.
