To be fair, most of the options that will work on a badly stuck filter will ruin the filter [screw driver, pipe wrench, big channel locks, or 3-point]... but then again, you never want to see that filter again, and it's cathartic to be able to rid yourself of it. Just don't forget to lube the seal on the new one to not go through it again... but if you just struggled to get the old one off, you are usually thinking hard when you put the new one on about what will prevent the same agony in the future.

these are the Hydraulic filters side by side. The base as 3 magnets mounted on a shaft for collecting any metal filings that may be in the system it protrudes about 4" into the filter So i Drilled a 3/8 hole a safe distance away from those magnets. It worked but the frustration level was off the charts.
I don't want to offend anyone, but you would think that college educated engineers would be able to foresee something like this and make sure these filters are mounted in an area that can be easily accessed.

I think college educated engineers should be made to work in the environment of their specialty which would give them mental pictures of all the problems that could easily be solved while still on paper.
Sorry, just my 2 cents

I had the same problem. Final solution was a strap wrench with sandpaper wrapped around the filter to prevent slippage. Worked like a charm!
Great idea, sandpaper. šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ»

Paint doesn't lock filters in place, however, dry seals and over tightening do and that seems to be a common practice from the manufacturers for some reason. All it took, was just a few drops of oil in the filter seal.

The big hydraulic filter on my tractor wasn't painted and it still was a pain to remove and the mechanic at my dealer almost smash his hand really hard after the engine oil filter finally broke loose, again not painted.
agree, my take is that manu don't lube filter seal to ensure no chance of filter backing off. then they leave the removal problem to the new owner.
i.ve read where some owners puncture through the filter w/screwdriver, then remove, but i've avoided that one

On medium sized tractors, I've had the best luck with this type of oil filter removal tool, the vise grip plier style.

They work great and I can grip the filter near the base where the torque does the most good. I bought mine on a lark from Harbor Freight but now they are my favs. If you can get them on the filter you can get the filter off.

Yup LS has the same issue. I just happened to read a forum or two when I bought my LS and they had a conversation going on that. When it was time to do my '22 MT-235 first hyd filter change I couldn't believe how stupid tight it was.
I used three different types of tools AND the screw driver and it still was an issue. The tools just twisted the can like a pretzel and the screw driver just split the can like a pop can. I was finally able to use my cheap band clamp on what was left of the metal. Thank goodness I didn't have the magnets that the OP had on his.

I did try my impact wrench but as its been brought out too much of the impact motion is lost over the length of the filter.
There is vey little room on my tractor to get a breaker bar in.
I do like filter type socket that AB suggested. what is the technical name for that and my filter is 4.5" diameter, do they make them that big?
Regards, Joe

When nothing else works I break out the oil filter vice grips. I must have 20 different oil filter wrenches/sockets/straps/chains. I might only get 1/10 of a turn on a filter in confined space, but the vice grips have never let me down. It helps that I have a 4 post lift and I don't have to crawl under the tractor/car/truck/mower.

I had a tough one on my jd skid steer that I bought used. I went to change the hydraulic filter since the machine was new to me and I wanted everything serviced before I used the machine. I tried all different wrenches. Including the pliers type which only put a hole in the filter. Eventually I had to chisel what was left of it off of the mounting plate. Once I replaced it with a new one I never had a problem again.

It’s been years ago a friend used the screw driver trick. It didn’t work, the filter just shredded. He eventually had just the base stuck in the engine. This was on a Dodge 2.2 front wheel drive so the filter was easy to get at so he took a chisel around the edge of it and was able to spin it that way. Once you do the screwdriver trick you’re committed.

Once you tear the filter using any of the other tools you are in same boat. No backing up, forward at all cost

I have busted up filter using all methods, chisel or even better air chisel becomes the last resort before fire enters the ring.

Have a large hydraulic filter on my Power Trac PT1445 that I was only able to remove using this Bremen chain wrench. It crushed the filter and made a small hole in the can, but I was able to contain the mess with a plastic bag.

Lucky to have enough access to use this style of wrench.

Those filters can be a real pain. I seem to remember the hydraulic filter on my MF Gc being a royal bugger as it was painted with the rear end color. Pretty sure I drove a 16ā€ drift pin through it. Wasn’t the first one I’ve done that to. I have a few different oil filter tools and the big drift is the last resort.

This is really weird. I purchased a new Kioti RX7320 74hp. I am doing the 50hr service. I have bent 2 of the standard type filter removal tools and they have not even budged yet.
I have 1 more type coming tomorrow a 3 point type that uses a 1/2 ratchet. I am wondering would it help if i went around where it connects with a razor knife? There are 2 filters and they are about 3/8" apart so not much room.
I am not a career mechanic but I have turned a few wrenches in my day and have never seen a filter on this tight.

Help
Had this on a tractor that came in recently, l3010 kuboter.

I finally resorted to an air hammer with a chisel bit- dig into the base of the filter a little, and blast it at an angle.

Those chain-wrenches bite really good too.

Hope this helps

The thought just occurred to me that maybe I could try wrapping a thick rubber strap around the filter and then using the chain wrench. Maybe that would prevent it from tearing into the filter?

I have yet to fail removing a filter when using a simple band type filter wrench in the correct size, and it's been hundreds of them.

But no, not the strap kind, but the all metal versions. No idea why more people don't use that kind since they're so effective. I must have a dozen different filter wrenches, but rarely use any of the other ones.

Same. I have two in different sizes, which must be 50 years old, and they always work. They're great for mowers and tractors, where you can usually access the filter from the side, but not so much on modern cars.

They're pretty much identical to these, for anyone who hasn't seen one, and the handles pivot to get into tigher spaces:

In the case of OEM-overtight filters, I've had my metal strap wrenches crush the fitler can, but they never lose grip!

For cars, where it's sometimes only practical to grab the end of the filter as it's jammed up between other things, I usually use these:

When those fail, I grab this little medival torture device, which will twist and destroy anything you put it to... should you have two free hands and all the coordination required to keep it on the thing you're trying to turn:

If you like those you'll love the ones I use, with a 3/8" square drive instead of a handle.

Then you can use extensions and swivels which makes them usable in most any situation.
