HOUSTON (AP) A Boeing 767 cargo jetliner heading to Houston with three people aboard disintegrated after crashing Saturday into a bay east of the city, according to a Texas sheriff.

Witnesses told emergency personnel that the twin-engine plane "went in nose first," leaving a debris field three-quarters of a mile long in Trinity Bay, Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said.

"It's probably a crash that nobody would survive," he said, referring to the scene as "total devastation."

The cargo plane made a steep descent shortly before 12:45 p.m. from 6,525 feet to 3,025 feet in 30 seconds, according to tracking data from FlightAware.com

The flight was being operated for Amazon by Atlas Air, according to a statement from the airline."

Well that's the wrong Priority...........I submit that a lot of orders to Granberg and other places for small consumables can be shipped/mail in small padded envelopes at at lot lower price for shipping. I get stuff from ebay all the time in small padded envelopes on free shipping, to me I think it's a way to generate shipping charges so companies can get kick backs, we're living in the time's of companies first and consumers second or maybe 3rd, IMO.

Amazon Amazon the great and powerful Amazon in the land of OZ, I can hardy ever get a better deal on Amazon, I always do better at ebay or even Walmart. I go on Amazon a lot for starting price, then it's on to ebay, Walmart and other sites for the purchase, just like I did for these Grandberg sharpening stone, Amazon beat by a mile, on the high side.

What is this TBN shipping, for what, how far, fair priced, anyone used it?

The rate increases nearly everyone else pays can be attributed at least in part to the unnaturally low rates AMZ has negotiated (OK, strongarmed) with carriers.

We are a small business with UPS daily pickup. We do a fair amount of business with them ($50-60k annually), and qualify for not-insignificant discounts. BUT in spite of that there are many signs that we are subsidizing the AMZ rates.

These changes have all been over the past 10 years or so:

First they added Dimensional Weight to Ground shipments (used to be only Air for decades), with an exemption for packages under 3 Cubic Feet.

Then they removed the under 3CF waiver.

Then they reduced the Divisor that's used to calculate the DimWt (effectively increasing the Billable Weight).

Then they reduced the Length for Additional Handling from 60" to 48" (this is a $15 per package charge)

Then they added a Length Limit of 96" to trigger the Large Package Surcharge (which adds $120+ per package)

There are others, but these are the ones that impact our customers, so I am familiar with them.

I just got these 6 Grandberg sharpening stones for chainsaw sharpening in 2 tiny bags and a small Cool Grind stick, and the box they came in I thought was over packaged and that makes me wonder if that doesn't have an affect on higher shipping charges. The total item cost was $15.75, Shipping was $7.65 flat rate, those few items could've easily fit into a small padded envelope.......

I don't know that a small padded envelope would be any less expensive. Depending where it was being mailed from it could actually be more. The flat rate boxes are generally a really good value. Plus, as mentioned above, it makes things much simpler for the shipper to have less options, which allow them to not have expensive Handling charges besides.

At least from Amazon the reason you get something small in an all too large box is that reducing the number of box options they have for the guys and gals doing the actual packing saves them a ton of money. That is more than off set by the increased shipping costs of those smaller items.

For the small guy seller using the flat rate box is just easier. It is one price no matter where it is going in the US and I believe comes with a coupe hundred dollars in insurance wrapped into the price. So they can easily either quote a shipping price or say free shipping and know exactly what to bake into the price of the item to make it work.

Tell me how I can order a small electronic part from China for low dollars, and it is shipped for free from China via "China post" and comes in a small flat bubble pack envelope. How does that work?

If it's less than 1/4" thick and the envelope is less than 6-1/8 inches high x 11-1/2 inches long it can go as regular first class mail (within the US). Costs a buck or less up to 4 oz.
