In our county (Goochland, VA) we certainly don't charge separately for county residents to use the transfer station for most garbage. The county's philosophy was that we kept the roadsides, etc, cleaner that way. I supported that both as County Supervisor for a term and as our appointee to the regional waste management authority during part of the '90s. The worst problem now is blow off on the way to the station from those pick-em-ups.

On the pets issue, most of you seem like caring folks. Even if some of you do own those orange things. We have acquired almost every one of our cats via dumpoffs, and though we love them dearly (including the recent one who came with the 4 kittens born June 1), I would really like to catch one of the jerks responsible.

When I was a child I was at a friends house one Sunday afternoon after Church,we were playing baseball,when up came a truck and dumped a dog out in front of my friends house.The funny thing was it was the same dog my friends father had dumped on someone else,they just brought him back home. I remember telling my father,did he laugh.What goes around comes around. Never dump animals it is cruel and a irresponsible way to handle a problem. I put these people right up there with people who dump trash on your property,which leads me to another story.My grandfather had a farm and a highway ran along it,one day grandpa was squirrel hunting,he seen a truck stop,back up in the edge of his woods and start unloading trash in a ravine,grandpa stood back and watched them from a distance,he let them unload every piece of trash,my grandfather then stepped forward out of the woods and holding his shotgun he said: okay go ahead and load it all backup,which they did.

Last fall we saw a new dog running around the area. She was friendly but very cautious. It was getting cold and snow was starting to fall. A few weeks later we saw her out with some older pups. By now it was real cold. We spent several days trying to catch the pups but never could get him. Pup would run back under and old storage building and hid. Finally one day we found them in the yard and was able to catch a pup.
Seems only one pup survived. This pup was cute but was terrified of humans. It would go into a corner and just shake and shiver. You could hold it but as soon as it was set down it would run back into the corner.
Momma dog followed the pup into the house and seem to be happy inside. She was a bit skidish but quickly warmed up to the family. The 1st couple of days in the house she just laid on a rug in the floor. She looked so tired and relieived that she could rest a bit. We fed both of them for a month or so and tried to find their owners, but it appears they were abandoned and I suspect beaten by previous owners.

We eneded up taking the pup to the shelter and it was quickly adopted. We kept momma and she is part of the family now.

Animal dumping happens all the time around our place. The problem escelated when the local pound became a "no kill" shelter. They quickly became over populated, the vets stopped doing free spay/neuter for adoption and if you bring in an animal (yours or not) they charge you a $5.00 / animal "housing" fee. They also use video to capture license numbers in case you try to "dump" the animal after hours.

I've taken in my share of dumped animals but there is a limit to what can be expected. I usually try to catch the dogs, tie 'em to a tree off my property and call animal control from a pay phone.

It's a sad state of affairs.

I have been busy this spring and missed this post. "Poster of the Month" all right /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif For some reason I wasn't surprised.

I have had everything from dead calves to ferrets dropped off at my place. Once even funny looking pheasant, tame as heck.
I somehow think the word got around about my wife. At one time we had 11 cats she adopted from drop offs. The second stop after they get dropped off is at the Vet. ($$$) Now we are down to two (thank god for coyotes). The two that remain always stick pretty close to the house.

Don't have much use for these kind of folk. I wonder how they solve their other problems?

Al, you'll notice the date on my original post in this thread was just over a year ago. I've been lucky; haven't had a critter dumped on us since that time./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I see most here have had some experience with animals being dumped. It has happened at our place as well. But, I'd like to change the subject slightly & ask a question: Anyone have any thoughts about neighbors/surrounding property owners that let their dogs (not picking on dogs, just more noticeable around me) run loose?

I am a firm believer that animals need their freedom/exercise. However, as someone with 2 small children that enjoy playing in the pasture & woods on our place, I quickly found out that they often can't do it safely because of 2-3 property owners in area (1/2 mile or so down the road) that let their Rottweillers, German Shepherds & assorted dogs run wild. even got to the point where I walked out the door of house & had a one of the dogs sitting in MY yard growling at me and with his hackles up! Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against dogs at all (own 2) or any particular breed.

Tried talking to owners: "Animals are meant to be free", "I won't keep them penned up", "they won't hurt anyone". Spoke to county law enforcement: "Nothing we can do unless they attack". Conservation Officer said, "if they're on your property & you have notified the owner you don't want them there, you have every right to shoot them".

Seems like it puts me in the place of either having to tolerate it or shoot them & have everyone around us up in arms. Anyone have any thoughts, suggestions or similar experiences to share?

Exactly! I have four dogs of my own, and will not have their health risked by some irresponsible dog owner's un-fixed animal roaming free. Haven't had one ignore the warning shot yet, but will do what I must to protect what's mine.
