Relief valve failure? How could those parts just blow out of the bottom of the hydrostatic transmission? Was the bottom of the trans damaged by riding over a large rock?

"I've priced a new HST from the dealership of $2,100 and $1,000 for labor....no way I'm paying it!"

You might have to, to get your tractor back. Looks to have had a catastrophic failure.
Good question... Don't believe the rock happened but who knows. I'm bery much a do it yourself'er guy and will be repairing it myself.:) Will definitely post pics as this saga continues....I was hoping somewhere out there had thiers off and could give me the part number off it so that I can get a new one coming for half the price Kubota wants for A new HST.

1 spring, kinked in the middle. The HST is very unhappy.
Ya for sure! At least it solves the mystery of why the damn thing wouldn't pull a 1% incline lol.

Depending how the backhoe was used before you purchased it may have stressed the hydrostatic transmission case. You and I both have no idea how this tractor was treated before you purchased it. The used hydro unit that was posted, if you can get a good warranty on it maybe your best most economical way out of this. I also agree with previous posters, don't skimp on the quality of the fluid. Use Kubota ultra full synthetic fluid. Best of luck, and I know you will get this fixed properly.

The one i posted the screen shot of is 45% of kubota price. 2yr warranty is $100, but i have no idea what it covers.

I hate to mention it, but Hydrogear might make a specific and available only through Kubota HST.

I don't know if this is true, and for your sake I hope not.

But I've been burned too many times to mention by parts that are only sold in mass quantities.

"Sure you can buy some, they come in lots of 10,000. How many lots do you need?"

Hi there :)

I have a 2004 BX22 Kubota that I bought used with 600hrs on it. I was very excited to use it for the first time (and stupid) even after noticing a hydraulic leak from the backhoe hose. After mowing, I got it to the trailer and it did not want to move forward or backwards but you could hear the HST pump wanting to work. I winched it up on the trailer, fixed the hydraulic line and put fresh hydraulic fluid in. I have probably put 30 hours on it since then but I have noticed it does not want to pull even the slightest of hills all that well. A few times I've actually had to pull it out backwards out of the blackberry bushes because the tractor was not seeming to transfer the power from the transmission to the wheels. I have noticed in the mornings it pulls the little hill better probably because of the viscosity of the oil being thicker.

So last week while mowing the grass and going up the lil hill the transmission made a bunch of noises and then started gushing fluid out of the bottom. If you look at the attached pics that's what I saw underneath it.

I believe the leftover pieces are from the pump off the HST? Learning about them since then, I think that is a pump piston as well as the spring that goes inside of it, with a piece of casing lol...

I've priced a new HST from the dealership of $2,100 and $1,000 for labor....no way I'm paying it!

I called Hydrogear who apparently makes the HST for Kubota, but I cannot get a price from them until I get the actual part number that is stamped on the unit and not Kubota's part number of K2561-14002. Hydrogear says there is no way for them to cross reference it...

Does anybody out there know what the actual factory part number of this HST?

Much appreciated!!!

IMHO it is not your fault that your HST grenaded after running it low on oil once. Most likely it was run low many many times before you got it my friend. The original owner likely got it checked out because it was down on power. Found out the HST was pooched and sold his mistakes/errors on to you. Hard lesson to learn but get some pressure checks done on HST tractors before buying them people. At the end of the day hydraulic pressures in HST tractors are every bit as important as compression in the diesel engine. That said look for used/rebuilt parts. Get them checked out before installing them. Not sure how handy you are with wrenches but the HST unit may be pretty easy to change out. Doing it yourself is worth looking into.....might even be something on youtube to give you an idea what you are getting into. Worth a look anyway. As for new parts....I am not sure what your take is on buying over seas is but I have saved a bundle [up to 70% in one case] getting parts from China. If you are not totally adverse check out Alibaba.com or Made in China.com

If that is what I think it is....It's gonna cost! It looks like a valve and spring from the HST valve blocks. I had to replace them on my BX24 a few years ago. $350+ each for the valve blocks. My question is How did it get outside the transmission casing? There would have to be a sizable hole in the HST casing to allow that valve to get out!

In looking at exploded parts diagram a possible place that piston came from is if the motor thrust bearing swash plate assembly disintegrated allowing the piston to come out of the cylinder block and thought the housing. other more unlikely option is if the motor drive shaft broke allowing cylinder block to move sideways and then piston becomes lawn ornament.

Agree will be interesting to see pictures of the casting and internals but suspect a severe depletion of cash for this project.

Other concern is where else did the debris go? Other bearings in transmission case, steering system, back hoe. Hopefully not since those are on a separate pump with filtered inlet.

Best wishes to the OP on getting this repaired and operating again.

With hydraulics cleanliness is a must.

There is a stripped BX for sale on CL in the South Shore Boston area. May be worth picking it up as I believe all the parts you need are still on it.

Yes the whole thing sucks as mentioned Kubota wants $2,100 for a new HST. That's why I am looking for an aftermarket one and do not really care where it comes from lol... I'm not sure how the parts got out but I will definitely post pictures as soon as I assess the damage.

Thx!!

First off Hydro Gear don't make the Kubota HST unit, Kubota makes them, themselves. Secondly, you destroyed the unit and will have to replace it. I bet you used cheap fluid too. HST's require Kubota UDT or SUDT fluid. Time to bite the bullet and pony up the money for your lack of taking care of an issue (you ran the unit out of fluid with the leaking hose). Either than or sell it as is for parts.

You are gonna pay for your ignorance, one way or another.
First if all, thoughts arent facts so dont assume **** or give me a lecture! I DID NOT use "cheap fluid" and used what Kubota sells/recommends.

I can also give you the number and the name of the guy that has worked for hydrogear for over 20 years if you would like to talk to him.

I know that I should not have ran it with the leak but I did. Anyhow, it's funny that three different Kubota dealership mechanics have told me that just because I did what I did would not cause that HST to do what it did (one Kubota dealer owner I've known for over 30 years!)...Call it ignorance or call it what you want, you're an idiot! You should go reprimand your kids, sounds like you don't get enough of that.
