Plumbing - Sharkbite, Gatorbite reliability?

Have you ever used the bread in the pipe trick to absorb the water so, you can solder on a fitting, etc ?

I have never tried it, never saw a need to. If it's open enough to get the bread in I have no problem getting the water back out.

For those of you that prefer the old-school soldering repairs, I've used this product many times in my old home. It will glow from the heat, but the wall behind it stays cool. A great product!

As a guy who just retired from 37 years as a full-time firefighter, I always keep a squirt bottle of water with me when soldering pipes. Saw too many houses go up in flames when plumbers walked away from the job and thought that the area around a solder job was cool. I always give the walls around the repair a quick squirt of water when I'm dome.

You can get it at Home Depot and Lowes

I keep a small piece of sheet metal in the toolbox, curved to fit behind the pipe. Works great.
