Nice spot! Another vote for the 12ft and make the overhead doors a couple feet wider while you're at it, you will be glad you did. That's if it's not too late to change it.

For cars, pickups, SUVs minimum overhead door width of 9' and 10' is even better (those mirrors are expensive when they get broken). Boats, trailers, RVs - 12' wide doors. Want to get two vehicles through one door side-by-side 18' wide.

Overhead door width is NOT the place to cheap out.

Agreed. I have a 11' ceiling in my barn, but only 9 usable feet because of 12" ceiling joist to support the upstairs.

I would prefer the main floor to have higher ceilings

Well, we have had around 1/2" of rain today, so site prep is off until Monday. He said he will finish up in one more day. BTW I was driving home after checking progress on day two when I remembered that I forgot to take pictures.:sorry:

You can see in front of the 580 in two of the pictures what looks like headstones, well those are dog graves I need to relocate over the week-end. This will give the contractor the best route for the drainage.

I am going with 10' as that is all I will ever need. I am going with a 12' X 8' overhead door so I can drive my tractor in with the ROPS up. I will never own a bigger truck, or a RV. This is not my primary residence. There will be room for my tractor and implements, my truck when I am there and my son's pop-up in the winter. I am part of the "you can never build too large a garage/barn" crowd, but I also realize part of that is because given enough time, you will acquire enough stuff to fill all available space.

Sounds like you have you mind made up, but there are an awful lot of tractors in the 8'-9' height range with ROPS or cabs.

A regular 8' ohd will not give 8' of clearance to the floor when open. They usually hang down in the opening by 3-4 inches. That can be remedied I suppose, but it would take careful installation measures and spring tension to get the full 8' of clearance.

The backhoe on my TC40 in transport position, and my Wallenstein 6" chipper exhaust chute would both be squeezes on an 8' ohd. That is not very big equipment.

Well I owned my tractor. It is a Kubota B2320 and even with my Wallenstein BX42, it will fit fine in a 8' door. I have the equipment I need. I am going to be retiring from my high paying job and won't be buying bigger just because it is bigger. I am also not in competition with anyone, so yes, my mind is made up! BTW have a 16' X 7' in my home garage and it was installed properly, which means when it is open, I have just a smidge under 7' of height.

Well between rain and a family emergency for the contractor, nothing has happened in almost 2 weeks. As of now, the contractor plans to get back and finish up on Tuesday. The big pile of dirt needs to be moved and drainage installed. We were up to the property Friday and found a bear had used one our our new junipers as a scratching post. The tress was actually knocked over about 20 degrees. I straightened the tree and hopefully it will recover.

OK, site prep is done. Almost 8' was removed in the back of the site. Up side, I have gained a lot of level space that I did not have before, some of which the middle picture shows.

Looks great!, Hope it works out just the way you want it. I finely got my pole barn site ready to build on, a 36x56x12, 5/12 pitch roof/w scissor trusses, 12x12 ohdoor opening. now just waiting on the materials to show up, I hate to wait on anything ..I had to remove about 4 feet of land and drag it over to the other side, got most of it done last fall so it has settled in very well, dug it all with just a 4foot HD United box blade so things can be done with limited impliments, just takes longer than a Dozer, everybody keep saying " you need to get a dozer in hear" well yea that would be great but I have a tractor payment to make as well, 70 bucks an hour for a small dozer that I could'nt swing!! I had to keep reminding others that, But the MX 4700 got-ir done, has been a great dirt machine so far.
