pole barn questions

   / pole barn questions #41
I happen to deliver pole barn materials for a builder that has ten crews on. They build primarily in eastern PA, all over NJ. Depending on the customer and local codes, they either dry bag or redi-mix the pads. Regardless of the post being solid PT SYP or glue lam (heat/glue/pressure laminated 2x using spline jointed PT for the base and SYP for the rest of the column), this is how they prevent uplift. They cut and pre drill 8" long blocks of PT SYP then nail four of them to the column towards the bottom. The posts are set then backfilled and tamped with onsite materials. I have never seen them use concrete to backfill.

Re: post construction on slabs. The only thing I see them doing is using "L" shaped brackets to bolt the posts onto sill plates on standard block or concrete walls.

When I had my one barn built, this is how my builder did it. They dug and hand tamped the holes. They then placed a precast 8" round pad in, set the posts and filled them with concrete. Will the concrete hold moisture and rot them off? I don't know. This is standard procedure for that particular builder.
