Pole Chainsaws

I have the Stihl Kombi pole saw with the 3' extension-very handy item to have. About one tankful of fuel through it and I'm ready for a break, though!

I own a Stihl pole saw, that kind that you can extend and it’s gas powered. It works well and has a really good reach. When it is extended out it is a real back breaker, when shortened it is not that bad. I can only use it about 45 minutes and I am wore out.

I too have a Stihl HT-103 gas powered, extendable pole saw. I suppose if one was to work all day with it, he'd be tuckered out. I have no problem using it around my place and I'm 88 years old and only 5'2". Using a shoulder strap helps. Going down low to medium height is no problem....and it does a great and dependable job.

For real high occasional limbs I use a manual extendable ARS pole saw with a 14" blade....I can even get higher when standing on a ladder or the back of my truck.
Cheers,
Mike

I've a 17' manual, an Echo PPT 280 PLUS the 4 foot extension (17 foot total) shown here in the first pic without extension
,g4-ppt280.jpg,

echoppt280at17feet.jpg

and an HF Lynxx (9 foot).

The 17' manual is handy, but my arms get tired after a while. I'm worn out after cutting four or five 4" limbs.

The Echo PPT 280 PLUS the 4 foot extension, is a small chainsaw on a long stick. I've only used it rarely, but when I did it was worth it. I've cut through 8" limbs at full extension. It's not something easy to wave around, I tend to struggle a bit to get it up on a limb, but then the limb always comes down.

The HF Lynxx is great but only reaches about 9 feet. I like to use it with my M4700, drive under the limbs, cut them so they fall in the FEL. I'd like to extend the Lynxx.

The bad thing about my SunJoy electric chainsaw is the 8 pounds head, when attached to the pole pulled out the 8 foot 8 inchs of length, you have now close to 90 pounds your trying to hold steady while trying to cut something, everytine it swings you really feel it's weight working against you.

Then like today where i had about a 150 pound everygreen bush limb i cut right above me, fall down and hit me right on my safety helmet then both me and the pole chainsaw ended up on the ground.

I have a cheap 110v saw and run it off a little 900w HF generator.

I will be getting the Lynxx pole saw as I am happy with my new Lynxx chainsaw.

My buddy haS the Stihl saw and it is way too heavy and cumbersome IMHO. But it does run very well.

A wind storm brought down a tree last night so today I had a tree across my driveway. I debated getting my husqvarna 455 rancher out, but the tree was fairly thin, about 6" in all but the lower trunk. But I thought I'd give my 8'-15' electric pole saw a try since it wasn't far from the house. The tree was about 25' tall but leaning at a 45 degree so I could extend the pole up and start at the top and work my way down. Buzzed all the branches quickly and easily. It seems i'll only be bringing out the big saw for big stuff. For little stuff, the little saw is a lot easier.

The weight of these telescoping saws is why we can't advise there use. As you state, they kill ones upper body. The simple and less costly, extended saw system (what are they called?) reduces that very much. I've ran these all day, and I'm not all that strong.

I use my extendable Stihl with it collapsed for a lot of small stuff fairly often. Doesn't wear me down any.

Now, extended to the max and working way out it will but I seldom need to do that.
