To answer all those questions....it depends.

They're are many different types of seals. I have no idea what kind you have.

The test I mentioned is easier than opening the cylinder, so why not try.

Don't even have to reinstall the cylinder. Just hook hoses up, extend, unhook rod side hose and try to extend again....observing how much fluid comes out thatrod side port. Literally a 5 min test

LOL, just a little messy I know it's not hard to do, I just can't really get to doing that until the weekend anyway. These holiday weekends screw with the rest of my week.

Which begs another question, let's say I was totally wrong and the problem wasn't in the cylinder at all. Is just the act of opening the cylinder and taking the rod out require that all the seals be replaced or can the old ones remain? And, what if it just that one of the seals rolled off (however it may do that, I don't know). Does that seal or all the seals need to be replaced, or can it just be reset?

I have no experience replacing seals. But I would lean toward replacing the seals since you have it open. You might be able to reset a seal and never have anymore problems, but if it was a seal and it pops again it would be pretty frustrating to me. It is a balance between the price of the seals and the difficulty of getting to them to replace them.

when i remove my bucket from the FEL arms so i could switch to the snow plow - i pull the bolt out that holds the pin on the lower part. i start out with the bucket flat on the ground then "tap" the fel joy stick to find that sweet spot where the middle cylinder is not putting so much tension then push the pin out. you should be able to do the same thing. once the bottom pin is out you can shut off the tractor and then relieve the pressure with fel stick by moving in circles THEN you can remove the two lines off . remove the top pin and you should be able to put it on the bench for repair. once you get the cylinder apart- you will see its not all that complicated to work on and you should be able to determine weather the cylinder is at fault or not.

The cylinder is already off, it wasn't too difficult. I curled it completely and dropped it to the ground, released the pressure after turning it off by moving the lever (as suggested here) around and then disconnected the quick connects and then the lines. I might have lost a quart of fluid during the process.

Thanks for easing my mind about taking it apart. And dougtrr2, I pretty much agree with you. I don't want to have to do it twice.

Broke Piston.....yea that will do it.

A little JB weld and you should be back up and running :thumbsup: Seriously, was there any scoring on the inside of the cylinder? I would do a very close inspection. If that part failure raised any burrs in the cylinder bore it could tear up any seals you put in.
