Popping out of gear

in this tractor the selector plate prevents you to choose two gears at once. If the plate is up side down it would be like throwing it over your shoulder. You could still choose all of the gears and it could be like this for years before one day two gears are selected together.

the plate is curved and on instalation the ends must be up wards. With the gear box in netural the two low points are placed in the two outstde seclectors. the gear leaver top is placed on top and the top holds this in position.

If you look closely at under the gear leaver top you can see were the selector has marked the top. one can also see some elecrtolis caused by steel sitting there.

I would say the selector has been up side down for a long time as he was not been able to choose all of the gears when he first got the tractor.

he might want to put the selector plate in as in the picture having the slot running back to front. that should stop him being able to choose two gears at once.

the gear that bruse 1966 has displaid is the high raitio gear on the bottom shaft. it is the second gear from the back and more than likely in your tractor the pins are worn. If those pins are worn so will the mating holes. You will need to replace both male and female parts of that dog.

Yep, 2 gears need replaced.....

Finally! By the way my Trans and gears works great but thanks for enlightening us what to look for if it's not in the shifter. And It Still wasn't 800 words between both of you.

in this photo the gear is in 4th gear. Again it is a dog comection.the gear that bruce is talking about is below the high raitio or 4th gear .

in the photo I have marked the pin/lever for the Hi - Low gear change. I notice in over time. If yours is stiff it may be a good time to clean the pin and hole.

To remobe remove handle and then the locking tab on the out side of gear box. tie a string around the pin so it wont come off. (this saves trying to fish it out of the gear box.) After cleaning all of the paint and dirt off the pin using a peice of wood for a punch remove the pin. A clean rag over the selector rod and gears will catch any small bits of dirt.

As the string is also tied to the stearing wheel (give it a bit of slack) the hole and pin can now be cleaned after removing the 'o ring'. After cleaning replace the 'o ring' and lub with grease. Reinstall the opposite to dismatle and check that there is full travel before replacing top.

that is maintance and will prevent or delay the leaver becomming stiff.

I was unable to remove that pin/lever on my YM 240 when the round finger bent. In lieu of unpinning and disassembling the transmission, I had to cut the end off the shift lever end of the pin in order to gain the necessary clearance.

I was able to push the pin far enough in to be able to lubricate the pin and wipe out most of the hole in the transmission casting.

Got my parts from hoye today and reassembled the shift assembly. It will be a few weeks before I get it on the tractor so I will update then. Thanks for all the help.

How did the new parts compare with the old? Much evidence of wear?

the onlt noticable damage/wear was on the shift lever guide.

had a **** of a time getting that spring compressed to get the c-clip back on. Dont know how many times it launched off accross the room..lol.

sounds like me.. And Yeap! I'd say it's has some wear. I'm curious how much the Shift lever or the ball on the end has worn. Is it still big enough to seat on the Guide without Going through it?

Heading down tuesday to pick up my mowers from the JD dealer, so I'll finally gy a chance to get the fluid drained, changed and get the shifter assembly back on. We'll see what happens after that. Will keep everyone updated after that. Again thanks for all the help.

my string of bad luck continues, an hour into a 4 hr trip I get the call that my kid is sick, so I continue the trip pick up the mowers, drain the fluid, and add what I thought was enough fluid when I bought it(2 gallons). Ha, not enough, put the assembly back on and will do a trial run when I get more fluid and get down next time. Had to come back that afternoon because of my child.

I couldnt believe how nasty that fluid was, it was off colored almost pukey yellow, the new stuff is clear yellowish, dont know how it got so contaminated.

Looking forward to my next trip to get the rest done, oiled changed and see how she's gonna run... fingers crossed.

First off, hope everything is ok with the child. :thumbsup: This being as long a thread as it is I don't want to re read the whole thing but just wanting to remind you to pull the strainer and clean it while you are changing your fluid. Probably have but I can't see it. :laughing: I believe your 2000 will hold about 16 quarts.
